I've lost some weight (about 17 ~ 20 lbs) in the last 6 months or so, and was shocked when I checked my race sag tonight - a little under 3.5", or about 88mm. Backed off the spring to get it back to around 96 to 98mm. But now my static sag is up to around 1.3" (33mm).

What's a good number for the static sag? Tried a search, and it's not working yet. Checked the JustKDX and MX-Tech sites, but they don't cover static sag. I know this has been covered somewhere, but could use some help.

If I don't go for a softer spring, what am I likely to find in handling traits with the stock 5.0 spring, assuming it's now too stiff?

Reason I checked it tonight is that it was kinda skatey in the mud a couple weeks ago. Glad I checked.  :)

Static sag between 25MM and 35MM is good. 33 is fine. Congrats on the weight loss, so far I've lost 10 lbs and have much more to go. It comes off harder at age 48!

I could state my opinion which comes from reading this and that..and just blatantly state: Free sag should be between 5/8 and 1 1/4".

But then there would be argument and dissension amongst the ranks.

So I'll post my 'proof' as obtained from a google search on "free sag".

If you want further info, look up the 400 some hits on the subject! ;)

The proper static sag with you on the bike shoud be 1 to 1 1/4 inch.

With most full size bikes look for .... the static sag measurement ending up at a point between 15mm and 25mm, with 20mm being perfect. If you get your race sag properly set but your static sag is less than 15mm, you will need a heavier spring to correct this measurement. The same goes if the static sag is greater than 25mm, except a lighter spring will be needed to correct the measurement.

Static sag numbers should be approx 15-25mm. If your number is less than 15mm, you may need a heavier spring. If it is greater than 25mm, you may need a lighter spring.
