Steering stem removal

Is the upper steering head bearing a tapered fit? Has anyone serviced there steering bearings lately? I'm done now, but not without a few surprizes...Thanks gasgasman for the reply, I'm aware of the stem being pressed into the lower triple, my problem was getting the whole assembly out of the steering head to service the bearings. It took the sledge hammer method, but I found a few other things that surprized me....................

The stem is pressed into the lower fork clamp.

Looks like the upper bearing is frozen to the steering stem.
