What bikes have you owned?

I'm 17, been riding for about 3-4 years.

In order of ownership:

1976 YZ80 (way too small when I got it at 13)
1985 KX80 (first bike I ever rode actually - bigger, but still too small)
1980 CR125 (got it for 200 bucks (it even ran!) - flies in the powerband, but suspension is awful)

ride it like it's mine (actually my dads, but he hardly ever rides it): 1984 CR250 - I started riding it before I got the 125, and I couldn't really ride the 125 (dual shocks) after getting used to the 250 (monoshock). Even though it's old, it can still go faster and fly higher than I can (but I'm working on curing that :) ).

Since all of my bikes were purchased with money I earned, I haven't been able to get anything remotely new... but I still have fun! I'm also saving for something better...

JT1 60 Yamaha Mini Enduro, '71? my first 2 stroke, faster than the CT70, previously owned by a chubby kid so rear shockes were bent

TS185 Suzuki, way too big for me and had to push start- no kickstarter, removed one shock so the suspension would move:) , destroyed when I "took too much apart" trying to "fix" it

the above three I bought for under $100, and figured out how to fix them enough to ride.

KDX80 Kawasaki, '82, first Uni Trak in the neighborhood, my first "good" bike, put really big front sprocket on so I could keep up with neighbor's CR125 on top end

TM125 Suzuki, '74, highly modified, way narrow powerband, wasn't real impressed with this one

Some weird old Jap trials bike, great practice for balance

400 Enduro Yamaha, bad CDI or something caused this bike to go from sputtering to full power without warning! With the slick rear tire, it would sometimes dump me off! Scary fast top end, no suspension.

XL350 Honda, was junk when I bought it, I got it running, started on fire twice, frame was cracked in many places, sold for parts

PE175 Suzuki, '82, too tall for me, learned to climb hills with it, nice bike

RM125 Suzuki, '82, awesome bike, probably still running today, engine was still good when I sold it after years riding on the same top end!

495 KTM MX, '84?, monster motor, too heavy, poor suspension, learned respect for power, goofy left side kickstarter and no choke, ditched it after finding out a set of clutch plates was $375 :think

CR125 '88 Super bike in every way!!!

CR250 '88 Also a great bike!

CR250 '92 My first almost new bike, way better than the '88 but had terrible forks

CR250 '93 Basically the same great bike with the same terrible forks (did I mention the flamboyant pink plastic? Oh yea, pink was cool back then, I forgot...

RM250 '95 Tired of having weak suspension, I switched to Suzuki. I learned this was a step down in quality, but suspension WAS better...this was an ok bike with weird handling and super forks.

RM250 '96 Better handling and even better forks, loved this bike! Kept this one 3 or 4 seasons, modified everything including 300 kit!

KX 100 '99, supposed to be wife's bike, I modified and rode the stuff out of it, had to sell before I got hurt doing 70' tripples on the silly little thing:) (the temptation was too great)

RM125 '98, Bought as an experiment to see if I wanted to get a 125 again, yes I did want a 125 but this bike was a roach with good forks (bought from an A rider...never again!)

KX125 '00, Great bike with ho-hum engine, loved the bike, NO breakdowns whatsoever (great quality), sustained a rediculous hit when I overjumped a big jump with no apparent damage (except for me needing a change of underwear)

CR250 '01 Love it! Came with funky jetting, but no biggie...other than that, motor runs so good I haven't even THOUGHT of modifying it!

CR250 '00 Bought as a project...for sale!

also, 250 Honda racing 3 wheeler, why? I don't know. Ported the cylinder at work, kept running over my foot in turns, friends always wanted a turn, sold before someone got hurt!


I'm sure I forgot a few. I am in my early '30s now.

This is long already, so I won't go into street bikes, go carts, sleds, and personal jet-packs...

I'm curious what you remember about your Hodaka? When I had my Super Rat I had heard about the Combat Wombat's but had never seen one up close.
I do remember being one of the few who had a real dirt bike. I also remember never going too far without a plug in my pocket. :)

1976 Suzuki TS100 My first bike given to me by one of my lawn mowing customers. (I used to think that bike was fast :scream: )

1982 SUZUKI RM125 Split it with my friend and bought it with a blown shock (unknown to me)

1982 SUZUKI RM125 Parts bike for the one with the blown shock

1985 YAMAHA YZ250 Really nice, fast with poor rear suspension

1984 SUZUKI GS550ES My first streetbike. Very nice my first and only bike I ever bought brand new. Dropped it (lightly) in a parking lot 2 minutes after I got it :silly: I still can't believe it.

1987 HONDA CR250R Everyone else loved this bike, but I just thought it was so FAT around the gas tank.

1988 KAWASAKI KX125 Bought this bike with only about 3 hours on it. Best condition bike I ever bought. I LOVED that bike. Lots of power and GREAT suspension. I'd buy one again.

1988 KAWASAKI KX250 I bought this bike from TUF Racing. It was actually Keith Bowens Supercross bike, minus the works suspension. They gave me revalved stock suspension. It had "cut" gears that I could shift under full throttle without the clutch OR letting off the throttle. Fastest 250 I've ever ridden.

1989 HONDA CR250R Very thin bike really nice never gave me a problem.

Long span and two jetskis later

1996 YAMAHA YZ125 Best handling bike I've ever had. Unbelieveably fast for a 125. I LOVE IT!

This just looked too fun to resist. Was a great trip down memory lane making up this list.I didn't start till I was 9 years old, but I tried to make up 4 lost time later. I'm 38 now. While I had my shop, I "borrowed" the 4 sale bikes that I was interested in until I was sure that I wasn't interested anymore. A lot of them I never planned on making any big money on, I just wanted to try them out. Now you have a good idea of why I don't have a shop anymore, it was as much pleasure as business. But very few people ever have a chance to do something they love, even for a few years. I spent a lot of 12 to 16 hour days at the shop, but it had great side benifits !

Looking back, I realize what a piece of junk it was. It had zero damping, quirky handling, and since I knew nothing about jetting (or even what a jet was ;) ) it fouled plugs constantly. The tank had a crack near the top, so I could only fill it about half way full if I didn't want to wear gasoline. At the time, though, I thought it was the greatest thing! :)

Man I loved my Combat Wombat. But there sure werent a lot of them out there. Just about everyone who had a Hodaka rode the Super Rat. It was a great desert racing bike. As for the fouling of the plugs I have to agree. But it wasnt until a year after I bought the bike used, that I got a manual and learned that the Hodaka ran a much leaner mixture compared to the Hondas and Yamahas. I must have went through a hundred plugs that first year. Of course back then when you were a kid you cleaned the plugs and used them again and again.

this is kinda funny cause for a long time i had an RT180 (big piece of garbage) and it broke everytime i went riding and spent numerous hours walking out of the trails. then a couple weeks ago i got my money together and got a 2001 CR250 and i love it.
