Okay, LL qualifiers start in less than a month, and I have yet to find anyone who understands the AMA's position on 144's in the 125/250F class. Chapter 3, section 7 of the rule book (http://www.mxsports.com/rulebook/AmateurRules2006.pdf) states to be eligible for the stock class, the engine bore may not be changed. However in the Motocross section, it states 144's are legal only if they started life as a 125 (homologated) and achieved the increase in displacement by boring only. So, by the rule book, does it mean:
1) there can be no such thing as a stock 144 (KTM), because it has to be manufactured as a 125, even though 144's are legal?
2)Or, does it mean that if you bore only you can still run a 144 in the stock class.
3)Or does it mean you must buy a 144 cylinder from the OEM and bolt it on? (no one does this yet)
4)Or does it mean that even though 144's are legal, it's impossible to get a 144cc if you strictly follow the rules, so you really can't have 144cc?

If #2 is the correct answer, how many people can tell if porting has been changed from stock, unless it was drastic? The first 144 to get protested would be a nightmare for the race official.

If #4 is the right answer, then why did the AMA even bother to say the class was from 100-144cc?

I've spoken with one AMA official and he said the KTM was the only legal 144 for the stock class. However, everything I have read and heard to this point says it's not legal because it came off the assembly line as a 144 -- it was not a homologated 125. This is going to get confusing. :bang:

Someone correct me if i'm wrong but, I think they said that you could not race the 144 Ktm, but you could race a 144 that was bored out from a 125.

In talking with Eric Gorr he said that the KTM144 now has a 125 cylinder included with it so they are technically manufactured as a 125 that just happens to have the 144 attached. This makes it legal. the other brands are legal if they were 125s and bored to 144 and not jumped in displacement by stroking or bore with stroking.
Not sure how the porting is going to be judged.
As usual the AMA is clueless about th rules it has made and has no idea how to enforce/interpret them

i bet you would be lucky to find a ktm144 to buy anyhow. I spoke to Eric about the KTM125 and it can be 144ed no worries with the 58mm flat top.

the whole rulebook really is a mess though.
