Whats the best vintage trial bike??

I have learned from reading on here that yamaha made a trial bike with a 175 engine and I have a 81 MX175 and really like it,is it the same engine only modified??

What other vintage trial bikes are worth looking into?

I'm 17, 5'6 and weigh 210 been riding for about two years now mostly trails with some motocross.

I'm not really interested in doin much trials competiton just yet but who knows about the future.

Also I'd like to get a two stroke and stay in the lower price range of around 1000 or less

Basically anything Japanese is your best bet. If you are on a budget the last thing you want is a 10+ year old Spanish or Italian bike. Trust me on this one.

Never ride a newer bike until you can afford it & you will still have fun on an older well maintained bike.

Yea, the jap bikes are hard to beat. I have TYs, but the RL suzuki is a great bike. One of its foibles is the clutch mechanism, but I learned last week you can change the side case with a TM250 and get a more conventional actuation mechanism.

Been there/done that on the Spanish Ossa. Cool looking bike, crappy brakes, no primary kickstarting, front end really pushes if bike not leaned.

The TYs are more of an appliance. The Hondas are nice if you want a 4 stroke.

What part of the country are you in Matt?

We have a nice 76TY250 for sale here in the NW. It's all stock except for the sprockets & chain and it comes with an owner's manual.

Karl wants to move to a modern bike so he can try some local competitions. There aren't any vintage classes here and he's concerned about messing the bike up if he uses it in competition.

When we were down at TTC in Tennessee, the instructor there was a fan of the old TY's he said they were one of the preferred bikes for the vintage class.

Hey Matt, sorry, I forgot all about this thread. Karl sold the TY to a guy here locally aout 3 weeks ago.

You might give Charlie Robert's at Tennessee Trials Training Center a shout & see if he has any TY's available or knows of any.

We've got a 74 ty-250 which is great.
And a 74 tl-125 which is fun.

A Bultaco Sherpa is a great trials bike, but we dont have one :(

the Built'toGo's are great! but they are not Built'to'Stop do a YZ front brake up grade.

You can find tl125's around in your price range. I own a 74 tl125 and it is bulletproof. I let frinds ride it, use it as a pit bike, and it comes in handy for burning old gas that I let sit too long in other bikes! OEM parts are still available for pretty cheap too. As stated earlier, if you are looking for vintage, stick with the Jap bikes for sure.
