one of the first things I noticed when I purchased my old bike is that the front wheel had faded to a nearly silver color, which I thought nothing of at the time because it doesn't effect anything really, the wheel in question is an AkronT which is a fairly reputable name, it originally was colored to match the rear wheel which is gold in color, I noticed while looking for parts a photo of another similar bike for sale and it too had a faded front wheel, is this a common occurence on these older wheels? is there any way to have them restored? Thanks for your help.

The color is a process called anodizing. You should be able to have it redone if it bothers you. Check with any shops in the area that do chrome plating, and if they do not do it they should be able to direct you to someone who does.
