I personally would say the 2001 model. Out of all the CR250 I rode through the years it was the most potent to begin with. My 02 was extremely tame and needed tons of mods to get the power I wanted, but when I was done with it, it ended up being a screamer. I would continue to gather data on as many bikes as you can and then decide what you want. I would start with a strong first year model and then go from there. I believe the 00 and 01 were similar but I would choose the 01. Good luck.

i remember a article in motocross action on the 02 cr250 and it put out 47 hp stock and 50 ish ported by pro-circuit.they said it was still tame feeling but found that they were now holeshoting everymotot after the mods. I had one with out anymods and really liked it but had to ride it like a 125 more than a 250 but found it to be very fast.

Thanks, but I want to stick with the 02+ frame design...
I think as the models progressed to the 05, the crankcase volume went down, and ignition maps changed (for better?)

I totally agree with that one!

In that case I would just get the newest one you can find and do a total overhaul and as many mods as you can afford. That's what I'm doing right now with the 85 and 86 CR500s I just aquired. I'm going to use the 86 in an aluminum frame conversion, probably an 05 or newer CR250 frame. Depends on if I can sell my 05 CRF450 soon enough. (less frame hacking on a 2 stroke frame).

A lot of people aren't fans of the '02 because they can be a pain to jet properly...

I have an '02 with the stock carb, vforce reeds, bills pipe. Other than that it has the stock pistons / head. I've never had any problems jetting, but I bought it used :).

I honestly don't have a lot to compare with, because I've never ridden anything else besides my old '90 CR250.

I will say that I wouldn't go any newer than '04. That year they added a throttle position sensor. Other than that from 05-07 its more or less the same bike. Even from 02-07 you won't find any huge changes, just mainly different suspension setups.

If you are really looking for max horsepower, find an 02 and use the extra money to send it to Eric Gorr. I do know that this year responds well to porting and such, you can't really go wrong.

I have the 02' with Eric's low to mid porting, v-force2 on low tension and 38mm keihin airstryker carb that charges and it's a great woods bike. If you looking for HP have the 265 set up for high end get some tight reeds (v-force or boysen rad valve) and hold on.

I can't remember when Honda changed to the case reed design, I think it was around 03. These engines did not have good bottom end power.

02 was the first year, I had one of those and didn't like the lack of bottom end. It was ok after you got going, kinda like a 125 though.

my 04 cr 250 has v force 3 reeds and cage and the rest is all stock and it def. has some bottem end. I bought the bike like that so I cant compare it to stock.
