Why do you have a kdx in your garage?

Because I couldn't afford a WR250F, lol I really wanted the Yamaha but couldn't see paying 6K for it. I did some research and found that the KDX was a great woods bike and only $3,999 just what I wanted. I always thought that Kawasaki's were junk so I never thought I'd buy one but after reading about the KDX and looking at them I decided to get it, and have been happy ever since.

Got back into riding after almost 20 years and had a KDX back then. The guy at work who talked me into getting back into riding had a newer KDX so I started checking on e B a y and found one within a day's driving for cheap.
I keep it instead of looking for something else because it is so easy to hop up and customize to fit me and my riding and as my skills grow.

Because I'm sure not going to let it sit outside! :rotfl:

Seriously. I rode quads for years until I tried a buddies new '00 220R. He had to pry it out of my hands and I soon found my '90 200. After rebuilding, i.e. beefing up, the suspension, fresh top end, etc., it has been the best money I've ever spent. I'd get a new one, but this one is all set-up for me and I'd hate to have to spend all that money to set-up a new one.

Ride on brothers! :ride:

I was looking for a good bike for cheap (preferably 2-stroke).... no other bike seemed to compare to the KDX for the money... I bought my '01 in pretty darn good shape for $1600 2 years ago!! (it had one marginal season on it, and the guy I bought it from barely rode it cause it scared him... I like being scared, so the decision was easy)

I couldn't be happier with my purchase. The bike out performs many many many far more expensive bikes for trail riding. In fact I couldn't find a bike that seemed more appropriate for my needs (aside from the overly expensive KTM's)

I was looking for a bike my son could ride to school for a year then have to play with after that. It popped up in the paper for $1200.00 I offered $900.00 He took $1000.00 I spent another 1000.00 on stuff for it, new chain & sprockets, dot tires, bajadesigns kit, moose lighting coil, brake rotors & pads insurance, tags, kick stand (109.00 at the stealership ouch, ouch). Nicest little pocket rocket you could ever want to own. Almost a shame to put it back in the dirt but we love every minute of it.

Becayse this bike was built fo me - I mean that.

I ran one of these 10+ years back - then strayed away to more exotic rides.

I came back home. There just isnt a bike out there that I feel more comfortable on. I do have a late model KTM RFS - so I know what a quality machine is. I choose to race the KDX becasue I am just plain faster on it. I know I will never be an A rider on it - although that is me more than the bike.

I just love the thing. Reliable, inexpensive and a hoot to ride.

used to ride a new xr 250, but every time I fell down it would never start, my green machine starts on the 1st or 2nd kick whether its upside down, under water, or laying down , plus it allows me to race against the young kids in the junior under class in hairscrambles It makes me feel really fast :yeehaw:

Found a 91 KDX 250 advertised locally for 600.00. It was in really nice shape. I re-jetted, re-packed the silencer, and rode off into the woods. I have since replaced the zip-tied rear fender with a new one, and installed a dirt gear toolbag w/ Cruz tools. It beats the snot out of either of the XRs that I have owned (250 and 400).

In 1999 a friend approached me and said, "hey, you ride motorcycles...I've got to sell a dirtbike...would you like to buy it for $350?" At the time I had a street bike and hadn't been on dirt since I was 16 years old.

Of course I said "yes" to the offer. When I went to pick-up my dirtbike all I saw was a collection of parts sitting in the middle of a garage. My friend said “there she is…it’s a 1991 KDX. I use to ride it around the farm until my kids took it out for an unauthorized ride. So to make sure they never rode it again I disassembled it”

What he didn’t tell me is that his kids destroyed the bike. The only useful items were the engine, frame, rims and forks. I replaced or repaired everything else. In all I invested aver $1,800 to restore my $350 bike. But it was worth every penny.

So why do I have a KDX in the garage you ask. My KDX got me back into the dirt. It gave my son and I common ground (he would get his first bike one year later…an XR50). It helped me to meet many new friends. It got me back in touch with something that I forgot I loved so much. It gave me sanity.

I used DRN to ask many questions back in 1999 to get my KDX completed (I think I joined in Novemeber of 1999 and then joined again in January of 2000). Since then I have tried to give back when ever I can.

I found a KDX on E-b-a-y and did a few google searches on it and found this place.
Stayed up most of the night researching it, from everything I read the KDX sounded like a descent bike, so I slapped a $900 max bid on it and went to bed. Woke up the next morning and found out I was the proud new owner of a '92 KDX

Why do you have a kdx in your garage?

'cuz it's soo dang fun to ride!

I got my KDX after I bought my son an XR70 so that we could ride together. Doing a little research showed that the KDX was the best bang for the buck being water cooled, f/r disk brakes, light weight, etc. Like Wibby, I found this website and everything that could be done to the KDX and it was a done deal. Best tinkertoy I've ever gotten. :-)

Best,
Greg

Bought mine from a customers son who rode it once and dropped it!.
He bought it from a guy who kept every reciept for all the maintenance done at a shop.I got it for a great price the kid took a 600 dollar hit for his one ride!. I was back there a couple of weeks ago and the kid doesn't even want another bike!
I was out of dirt riding for near 20 years, since I bought my first Ninja 600r.
I've never been down in 20 years of street riding but I've crashed twice and laid it down at least a dozen times in a year of dirt riding!
Would I sell it? only to buy a brand new 220 maby next year!
I will only own one other specific type of bike other than a Kawi, and thats a Yamaha RD/RZ350, Out of three bikes only the one is non green and thats because its a 2 stroke twin street bike, Its actually quicker than any stock 600 not faster though! But it ain't stock!
The KDX kicks butt 2 stroke, simple, easy to mod, tons of torque, can't beat power to weight of a 2 stroke, you get to play with jets, smell 2 stroke oil, mix gas, argue premix ratios, have heated conversation about whos oil is best, cleaning power valves is a great excuse to be in the garage, try to understand needles, explain to girlfriend why one engine part is in freezer and other is in oven, I could go on forever,
Ya know I actually did once have a girlfriend who told me to bring a motorcycle into the living room so I could finish building it before spring came around, I may have messed up when I let that one go.

My friend own a 94 kdx250. 4 years ago he said to me ``hey man,you should buy a dirtbike!!??`` (I had never rode a dirtbike before he asked me that) So I started to look at the newspaper ads and I found a 89 kdx200 (1000$us) for sale near my house .I purchased the bike and started to ride it in the backyards with him (kdx250 guy).He told me how to drive this thing and after some practice I was able to ride alone . Now I race in harescrambles and enduros .

Due to my ignorance of dirtbike world the bike was not in good shape when I bought it.So in the first winter I started to strip down the bike and I did a complete rebuilt of the bike.(thank you so much to DRN forums!!!!!!!!)

Now the bike is in great shape and I ride any sundays and sometimes after work ...

then I did some modification to the bike (fmf silenser and pipe.power reeds, moose handgards.skidplate etc.... Man I love this bike ........................

you can see pics of my baby click here

ride safe! :ride:

Wow, quite a lot of common ground here! No wonder why I love this forum! I too, am a middle aged guy who was away from dirt bikes for over 20 years. While shoping around for a good used 2 stroke for my 14 year old son to move up to, we happened upon another father-son who had a KDX and KX125 for sale. I took a 10 minute ride on the KDX and was hooked. Couldn't stop grinnin' all day long, and I was not the teenager looking for a bike to begin with! With in 2 weeks we found my son a very nice and set up for woods YZ 125 and I located an 8 month old KDX 220 that the owner rode twice and no longer wanted to make payments on. A very good deal! We have had a great summer of riding, re-learning and even a little wrenching. My son was never much interested in my outdoor pursuits [hunting, skeet shooting and others] but 2 stroke off road bikes have become a VERY common interest. Have Fun, Jim G.

I also hadn't ridden in 20 years. It is probably that 40 year old guy search for his youth thing. I first bought a TTR225 and quickly outgrew it. Bought the KDX and grin even when I think about riding it.

I'm in the IT business that is why I'm up at 2:20 AM working on a server that is down. Did the same thing on Weds night. Any my company says we have 20,000 too many employees now, yeah right...

Riding is a great stress reliever. Hard to think about anything else when your out riding other than riding.

Hey do you think anyone will mind if I go out to the garage and crank it up just to hear it?

Another 40+ year old returning to dirt bikes. Went through a few, Vintage Huskys, Yamaha YZ250F four stroke (kicked my guts out), 2001 KX 250 (too fast!), then a 1991 KDX200 and added a 2002 KDX200. Kept reading Rick Seimans "Super Hunky" on offroad site "Dont Ask" column and decided to give the KDX a try. Love the bike I think it's a three stroke, best of both worlds. Fast and you can cruise & trail ride, quiet and like the larger seat. FUN BIKE!

Yet another almost middle-aged guy! My 5 year old was asking for a motorcycle for about a year, so I decided we both needed one. I bought a used KDX for me, and a KDX50 for my son. I used to ride in high school, and decided (with the help of this forum  that a KDX was a good way to get back into riding. Now my son and I have matching green bikes, and we couldn't be happier

At this birthday party most wives have everyone dress up in black and do the "over the hill" dance. My wife is something special - she had a "celebration of youth" and took up a collection to get me a new dirt bike! How's about that for great!
