i traded for a 2003 honda xr 250r this week (no book) and need to know about the oil level. how far up or down on the dipstick is safe or questionable and do you check the oil with the motor running or not. i thought (not) but was told otherwise by someone

Start it up, let it run for 5 minutes and then let it sit for a little while. Then check the oil. Keep it up towards the max on the dipstick, however I would not add oil, just change it. They take around a quart and a half. Anymore questions just ask, I have the same bike.

A key part of checking the oil would be to make sure the bike is upright and not on the side stand. You can do this by sitting on the bike. You might also want to know that you unscrew the dip stick, wipe it off and then set it back in but don't screw it in then pull it out to read the proper level.
