i got a xr80 and it ran great until one day it just died. i tried different plugs and every time it seems to react alittle different. i changed the cdi box and it just seems to do the same thing. if i use the old cdi it will turn over with one kick and run great for 5 min but now when iuse the new cdi you have to kick it a million times! it used to only run until it got warmed up and then it would just die. i checked all the wiring and it was fine, i cleaned the carb, used dry gas to get any moisture out of the tank. but i don't know why it does this, can any one relate or help? by the way does any one know the stock weight of the fork oil used? i want to have a stiffer suspension but not sure what to put in.

XR80 top end

i have a 2001 xr80 its that same bike that only runs for 5 min. but as long as i follow all the maintenace rules and clean the bike (carb, oil, airfilter, etc..) do you think i would ever have to change the piston or anything? i'm still young and i don't know too much about this stuff.

Is the carb properly adjusted and jetted? Almost sounds too rich if it will start and then not run after warmup. Are you choking and unchoking it correctly?

Not sure about the CDI swap and why that would cause hard(er) starting.

welcome to da fam'ly, man.
if i were u, i would follow the maint rules as u said, and not worry too much about anything else....unless u deliberately try to break a stock XR, they r about as close to bulletproof as it gets. when u do finally need a piston/valve job/engine work, your XR will begin blowing blue smoke...probably your grandkids will be riding it by then anyway! <g>

yea i'm sure the bike is jeted correctly . it ran fine the week before. i rode it every day after school but then just one day it died. the jets that are in there are all stock. and its not a clogged air way either. i run the choke when i start it and after a little while i slowly let it down but not too far down where it sounds as if its going to stall and i just keep it there until its ready to go to no choke.

Stock jetting but what about float, pilot screw and throttle stop screw settings? Your float needs to be set at 21.5mm the pilot screw should end up about 1/2 to 3/4 turns out after going through the idle drop precedure in the shop manual. The proper setting involves starting with it at about 2 1/2 turns out then messing with it until you see the highest RPM value. After your see it then you adjust to the proper idle speed (1400 RPM) with the idle screw. Once there you turn the pilot screw in until there is a 100 RPM drop. After that you should be able to reset the pilot screw to 1/2 out and be good. If you don't have a factory manual it would be a good investment.
