There's some thought about writing a grant to put up new "You Are Here" (YAH for short) maps on our ORV trail system. The DNR has made these signs before and they were part of the maintenance program. They have not made any new YAH signs in at least a few years and it's understood they have no plans to produce such signs in the future. Why this is, is another conversation in itself.
One of the CCC Board Members brought up the idea of us putting together a grant to make the signs. These ones would be based on the CCC's map base; that is a GPS recording of the trail. Of course I'm involved as I built the current map book and would be producing the data.
If you are not familiar with the current setup, here's the DNR maps:

Those are printed on 1/4" plastic, 11x17 in size and nailed to a 4x4 post at certain intersections along the trail. There is then a "You Are Here" sticker affixed to them indicating where you are on the trail. Vandalism is a pretty hefty problem with the majority being the signs are just stolen.
So far, I don't see much reason to go past the information of data on the old map. Our maps would probably be 2 color, red for trails and black for everything else.
Looking for your input on this project. How many signs on a trail, where, type of signs, information needed on the maps, etc. Especially looking for ideas relating to installation and theft/vandalism reduction.
