1995 cr250 problem

i am rebuilding my cr250 because my water pump gear broke into many pieces and scratched my cylinder. does anyone know how this could happen? another thing is that im having a hard time getting the crankshaft gear off without an impact gun. is there any other way to do it or do i need an impact?

There is no way a water pump gear could get into the cylinder. It's probably two different problems.

The scrathes on your cylinder are probably from overheating after the water pump quit turning.
