My Nephew pulled a coat rack made of 2X12 and weighs about 50# on top of him yesterday at church. The steel pipe used for hanging the coats on fell right across his forehead and the back of his head hit the concrete floor. He was pinned until my dad could get to him. While waiting for the paramedics he went into seizures and started bleeding from his ears. They took him to the local hospital where a catscan showed a fracture to the skull. The immediately they Life Flighted him to Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh where he is being treated. Some good signs were that they had to put him to sleep for the flight because he kept pulling at the straps that held him in.

They still dont know the extent of the damage done but do know that he ruptured his ear drum and has a fracture to the skull behind his ear. They are going to do another catscan today around 4pm after some swelling goes down. They are bringing in a specialist as the ear is still bleeding and they dont know if there is any damage to his brain. So far the outlook is good because he is alert, talking and knows who everyone is.  If all turns out ok he maybe home sometime tomorrow or atleast transfered to the local hospital.

As some of you know my one nephew cant seem to stay out of trouble around the holidays. Last year he tried climbing onto his other grandpaps dirtbike and broke his leg. Thank you for your prays in advance and i'll try to give an update late tonight when i findout more. I have a short break while his brother (6) is at school for afew hours to get a shower and take care of afew things at my home. I've been watching him for the past 24 hours and it has been quite the test. I hate trying to explain things to a 6 year old. This kid is bright and full of questions. One of the hardest was when he asked "If God is suppose to be good then why did he let Will get hurt while at Church?" I didnt know what to say to that.

Very scary indeed. On the bright side, as you say, he is alert and knows who people are, that is a great sign. Perhaps the little guy will be just fine in a short time. Kids are resilient. Best wishes.

I'll be praying for him and your family.

It's difficult to know why things happen, espically at church. A few weeks ago, there was an accident at our church. A two year old was standing near one of the stained glass windows. Evidently he leaned on the window becuase it broke and he fell out the window. It was approximately 10-12 feet to the concrete below. Everyone in the church was in shock. How could this happen in church of all places? It seems he did a flip on the way down and landed on his back. He had very small fracture of his pelvis (I think) but other than that, he was home from the hospital in a few days. I think we all witnessed a miracle.

Again, sorry to hear about the accident. Prayers are coming your way!

Chuck,
consider him on the list, along with the family.  Regarding an answer to his brother, a church is just a building, like your home (only cleaner)  It's the people in the church that make it what it is.

To Tree jumper's Nephew,  In answer to your question little guy, here is something I just recently read myself.

Sickness, war, accidents, natural disasters, tragedies--they come to the just and the unjust, the Christian and the non-Christian, the moral and the immoral.

God will allow many events to come into our life--good things, bad things, things that make sense, things that make no sense at all.  But every one of these things serves as part of his plan for us.  Tragedy in itself is not good.  But God can take tragedy and hardships and use them for his glory.  As God's children, we know that everything that happens to us first goes through his screen of protection.  And he will never give us more than we can handle.  We have the assurance that God is working in our lives to strengthen and develop our character.  More important he will never leave our side.

Don't forget to say your prayers for your brother tonight. :thumb:

A few years ago I was very angry about this very subject.  A little girl was murdered in this state, in a very violent way.  I have had a Christian upbringing all my life but do not attend church regularly anymore for reasons of my own.  I remember being so angry that this happend to this helpless little girl and wished I myslef could get my hands on the guy that did it.  I asked the very question your nephew did, WHY?  why couln't someone have saved her? Why did she have to die that way?.  A few days later when the parents of this little girl gave an interview to the media I was blown away at the peace they both had and yet I could see the sorrow in thier eyes.  In their statement they both said that they had forgiven the man and that god had a higher purpose for their daughter.  Thinking of my own son, I was still angry for a very long time but I have come to understand that God is painting on a larger canvas.  He is looking at the big picture.  We only see what is in front of us at the given moment.

Thank you everyone for the prayers and thoughts! We still havent heard anything about the third catscan as of 7:30pm. It was suppose to be done around 4pm. My sister said he is doing pretty good under the circumstances. My parents came back so they have Zach for now. I cant believe how much work is involved in having kids. It's giving me a new prospective. I always knew it was touch at times but that it is all worth it in the end.

Tree,

I don't have any of my own but I know for a fact, if I had to do anything for my nephew's or neice's I would in a heartbeat. These children are so special that I don't think I would have a second thought about it. I would be willing to lay it on the line if they ever needed it.

I wish him the best and your family as well. I't rough but as someone stated before they are resiliant and will suprise you at how quickly they bounce back from what seems like a traumatic wound.

As always in cases like this, you have my prayers and best of wishes,

Update: Latest catscan shows fractured skull behind the ear and major bruising to the facial bones around the eye socket and cheek bone. Both eyes are swollen shut and he has a wide range of hearing loss. The middle ear and ear drum are ruptured. The hearing specialist thinks he will recover most of his hearing if the damage heals ok. 2 more specialists are coming in the morning to see what they will do about the fracture to the skull.

He and his family will be in my prayers.
I had a friend that landed on his head, back in jr. high, and the doctors said it was a good thing that he bled from his ears, otherwise there could have been more serious problems with swelling, and pressure. God works in mysterious ways, and only he knows the whole plan.
God Bless!

This is terrible! Sometimes I look at my 14mo old and worry about all the things that could happen. I hate to see bad things happen to innocent or good people. We'll keep him in our prayers, keep us updated.
