Grew up riding 4-strokes and looking to get back into it with my son. I don't pretend to be race material but I do generally ride a bike hard. The bike will be used primarily for trails but will include jumps, hills and the occasional track visit. I'm 5'-11", 175 lbs and train (triathlons) every day. The bikes I'm considering include the 07-09 CRF 250R, CRF 250X, CRF 450X or even one of the KTM (XC 250F or similar) models. It's the same old story - don't need too much bike (is the 450 too much) but also don't want to be disappointed with the power/suspension of too little bike (250X ?). Experienced suggestions are appreciated.

I got back into riding at the beginning of the year after about a 9 year layoff. I grew up riding both 2 stroke MX bikes and big bore XRs. Since getting back into riding, I have owned an old RM125 and a Husqvarna TE250 which I have since sold. I now have a YZ400F and an XR400. I found myself wanting more power with the 250...and even the XR400 (about the same hp as the 250) which is my spare bike my friends ride. The YZ gives me all of the power I can handle. If you are an experienced rider that wants alot of power, get the 450, if not, get the 250. You wont be disappointed in the suspension of either.

Well either the crf450x or WR450 would be a good choice. Plentiful to find used, good support out there for them and both reliable. Also they both have the Estart with them.

The 250x is about the same weight as the 450x and stock the 450x is not a HP monster. so pretty tame so you can uncork and upgrade as you need.
