Hey people,

I've had mainly 2 stroke MX bikes my whole life, apart from a 05 Husky TE510 and an 05 RMZ450, and have just sold an 06 KX250R, and bought............ a DRZ250! :whoa:

Havnig said that, hopefully someone on here will sympathise with me, and understand my logic (or lack of)

Have you guys ever found that riding a modern MX bike at 40yrs old, is kinda like buying a funny car to race punks at the lights? ha ha...

Anyway, I bought this bike to have fun in the woods amongst guys on high-dolalr KTM;s and CRF's etc etc... and it can be done on the DRZ because power is not everything in the woods...

Have any of you downgraded to have more fun? And if so...what did you buy?

Looking forward to your answers.

John
PS Local bike shop owner is racing the Vet Enduro series shortly on a PE400!!!!! He knows where I'm coming from

Bought a used 2001 YZ125 from a friend for cheap. Pales in comparison to my 06 CRF450 on the mx track but it truly keeps my skills sharp. I make sure to go back to the red monster prior to raceday. Way more skill involved in keeping it moving fast and more fun too.

Right on, a 125 was going to be my first choice but we'll wait and see.

If you're doing woods riding I'd recommend a 200 two-stroke (KTM200XC-W or GasGas DE200). They'll smoke a DRZ250 in terms of engine and suspension yet they're way tamer than a motocross bike.

YZ450F to YZ250. Loved the power and tractability of the 450 but I'm having a lot of fun on the 250. I rode a CRF250 at Nacona a couple of years ago and had a blast. Had to ride it like a 125 but it was fun, thanks Thump!

It is highly gratifying to pass a guy on a new KTM when you are on a 1990 dual sport equipped XR250.

If you like to ride a bike that is looked down upon by the riders you pass, I recommend:

Older KDX200 ('89 - '94)
'91 - '94 KDX250 (the magazines hated this bike and proclaimed it a turd)
KLX250 or 300
XR250 (R or L)
TTR-250

The KDX250 can be dialed in to run quite well (the stock jetting, suspension and seat position are horrible). You can usually find them very cheap. It has a very heavy flywheel, good low end power and weighs about 20 pounds more than it should, so it is like a four stroke!

There is a team in northern Oregon/Washington racing XR200's. "Team Old School" has actually kicked some major butt. Also got a silver medal at Idaho City ISDE qualifier.

The reality is...ride what makes you smile as it could also make you wince in pain!!!

:) ha ha this is great stuff guys!

I'll keep the DRZ for a little while and wring it's little neck as long as I still enjoy it, but I see something like a KTM200 or maybe even a KDX, Or a GG in the future!

Or maybe dpo the proper off-road thing and buy a 250 MX bike and prep the engine and suspension to do off-road work!

I would buy a KTM250EXC but it seems every man and his dog is turning orange lately!!!! ha ha

Thanks again people

Get an older KTM with standard forks and rear linkage. You'll be at a "disadvantage" because of the older technology, plus you can get that cool original pumpkin orange color that makes you stand out from the crowd.

Years ago, I bought an XR200 for just that reason. I also have an older KDX 200 for the same reason. No question that a small bike can be very fun. But to me that means light weight. There are things one can do on a very light bike that become more tricky once the size grows.

But I find that the little bikes are better off being used by friends. Give me the HP.

CRF450 to CRF250. A lot more fun (for me).

It's almost always more fun to ride a slow bike fast than it is to ride a fast bike slow. ;)

All bikes have their limitations. That's why ya need more than one.
