Advice on an out of state purchase in Minnesota

I am negotiating on purchasing a couple of new '06 YZ's from a dealer in Minnesota & picking them up myself. I am told that they have to charge me sales tax unless they ship the bike. This sounds unusual to me. Shipping charges they are quoting to ship the bikes to Iowa are a deal-breaker for me. I was wondering if anyone out there had any ideas or suggestions, such as can I hire my friend in MN. to "ship" the bike to, say, Wisconsin? Any help would be greatly appreciated. My 83 y.o. mom was born there & was looking forward to the ride up with me. Thanks, Ken W

Tell them you will make shipping arrangements and your shipper will pickup the bikes -- of course its you... I have seen this happen more than once (oh, not MN though)

My van is there at my parents house. Does this mean you don't remember our economy vehicle vs. behemoth diesel banter last December? I' so hurt! But I'll get through it.

Flying back there Monday for "work detail." I'm paying my penance for putting them through all I did as a kid (and especially for what they don't know! :p )

Actually happy to have the opportunity to do it! I'm working on making their house, which I'm also buying from them, to make it more 'senior' friendly. Some family & friends want us to force them in to a care facility; they want to stay in their house.

BTW, tnrider, they say "we don't care how you ship it, we just need a bill of lading"

See http://www.dirtrider.net/forums3/showthread.php?t=140166 for additional perspective

Thanks, KW

oh, catch was that the license plate of vehicle and driver license had to be out of state for them to consider you an out of state shipper (sorry, forgot that detail)

i bought my new yz from a dealer in iowa and i am in northern mn. i think it was mason city powersports and they shipped it up to me. i know where i am no other yamaha dealer could touch the price but i paid 220 for shipping but no sales tax. it was a carryover 05 yz 125 in the crate brand new and i paid 3800 for it. minnesota's sales tax is getting rediculous.

Anybody in the trucking/ shipping business out there?
I'm curious exactly what is on a bill of lading. Can I create my own & hire myself?

They sell blanks at most larger truckstops.

We looked at importing a bike from MN to Canada and got the same answer unless it's shipped they have to charge us tax. You can simply apply to get the tax refunded though, sounded like it can take 4-6 weeks for the refund though.
