I've had the joy of owning them both, had bikes long before ever got any quads two my family had '88 LT80(mom's) '88 Blaster (bro's) The lt80 was fun mainly cause it was so small you could ride it down most trails with out any problem. the blaster was like most quads limited to what trials you could hit they got boring after awhile. you ever tried jumping a quad? man that can be a work out or scary. Quad's suck in the fact that if your ridding down a trial and get stuck ever try lifting a 300lb quad out of a mud bog? even worse ever rolled one on top of yourself stuck under it for about 20 mins till someone came along and lifted off ya? yes I think quads suck no I don't think it takes alot of talent to ride one especially if your think your kewl cause you can do a power slide or donuts thats childs play on quad. Do I hate most people who ride quads these days YES cause they are clueless. Are quads more dangerous than bikes? you better believe they are! Would I ever buy one again seriously NO! only to buy a cheap one to ghost ride it off a cliff.
Are quads a waste anymore only if your name isn't farmer bob. Sports quads are a joke, Quads where a thing of the late 80's early 90's I think they are a joke anymore. They call THAT a sports quad haha. whatever happened to the quadracers and trx250r's now those were serious sports quads. Quads technology wise haven't really gone anywhere since the early 90's.

Well I wanted to type something but BSWIFT beat me to it.

My beefs are

1. They weigh MUCH more than you do
2. When you go down a drop off even a small one, you need to go off perpendicular or you'll roll it.
3. People who usually ride them are....:think :think ............

If you have a few I'll tell you why I have a 2 1/2 inch scar on my thumb caused by a guy on a QUAD!!!!!

Think of an ATV as an elephant and a dirt bike as a cheeta. Now compare.

I wouldn't be caught dead buying an ATV over a Dirt Bike! I mean, I ride an atv on the farm i work at but that's only to do farm work. To get out to the farm I work at, I ride my XR (It's all dirt trails from me to the farm with a few back roads)

Dirt Monkey Jr

oh and i saw a signature on the DRN that said: A day without dirt biking is like a day on a quad!

I agree with you on all of that Joe. Like I said I have a friend who traded in his bike for a Quad, and when he had his bike I was a lot faster then him. I was jumping past him on the doubles and the step up at thurston and everything, and now he is a little faster on his quad and we rode on some wide open trails and he accually could keep up pretty good, and now he thinks he is as fast as me! I'm like yeah only because you have a thing with a motor that requires now skill and balance. I don't like riding with him now. That is one of the reasons as I told you I have no one to ride with.

I've never met a quad that could keep up with a bike in the woods / or anywhere else for that matter. Bikes are just too nimble with a much better power to weight ratio. I ride a big bike '01 XR650R, and I've only ridden my wife's warrior once. The time I did I could'nt wait to get off of it. That weight was ripping me around like a rag doll.

Like I said Jaybob it was a really wide trail. Accually it was more like a logging road with some turns. We were at high speeds the whole time. He thinks that takes skill. There is no way he could keep up with me anywhere else I am positive, but when your on a trail like we were there is only a certain speed you are comfortable with and I stayed there and he kept up most of the time. On his old bike he had trouble on that trail because we were going to fast, but now he has 4 wheels and he thinks he got some balance in the day it took to make the trade.:silly:

I hate this, Someone has simply asked a question and an honest one at that, And all the sudden the issue at hand has been side-tracked into something different, Sure I hate them hillbilly rednecks that are a danger at ALL TIMES ["Heya joe, wanna drink some beers and shoot rabbits down by the school???" "Hey yeah, lets take our truck\atv\peddle bike\whatever and do some deer huntin too"] . These people are simply STUPID, I dont care what they ride/dont ride, I have seen these people on everything from peddle bikes to sport cars! To answer the original question, which was worded poorly [sorry man, when asking questions like that, you need to be very specific, ie. what are the pros and cons of the mechanical variations between an atv and a motorcycle] I would point out that an ATV *does* require alot of balance, and are alot harder to ride at a faster pace than a motorcycle. Motorcycles are smaller, weight less, have better suspension, more technologically advanced engines and mechanical design, not to mention that they have the advantage of the 2 wheeled gyro forces working for them. It is easy to be fast on a machine that is fast. If ATVs are so easy to ride, how come not everyone is out riding on one instead of on BIKES?? Really, trying to compare the 2 is literally like comparing apples and oranges. BTW, For the most part, I am only speaking of the sport class atv, not the utility or 4x4 versions where bubba and joe can often be found not far from shooting at rabbits...

My biggest Quad gripe is that when they share the MX track with the bikes they wipe out all the nice ruts and berms in the corners that the bikes spend a dozen or so motos building up.

Well most of my ridding buddies and their significant others ride quads (I know I'm working on them). ATVs are EASY to ride, they have (mostly) electric starting and don't fall over when you stop. So... they are great to drink beer and ride on> (I do not condone this .. just an observation) You can use them to pull stuff around, plow snow and mow the lawn. Some people go faster on them then they can on 2 wheels and prefer them????? If you LIKE motorcycles stick to them and get a Cub Cadet to mow the lawn and blow the snow. Bikes rule and ATVs ... well they are not so much fun! IMHO :p

Hope this helps

ATV's are like PWC's and Snowmobiles i guess. For someone coming off a dirtbike, they would be a BLAST to ride for about a minute, and then u ask yourself, where is the challenge in this?? I have only ever riden a sport/utility ATV, and i admit it was fun for a bit - Ifit had a clutch and a 6 speed box it would have been better, but there is hardly a challenge in riding it. I read a post about moto-Xing ATV's elsewhere - from someone who came off a dirtbike and he said within a few months he was at the top of his class. ATV's are the soft option for people who can't ride a dirtbike - its as simple as that.

The *soft* option? Im sorry, But as I said before, ATV's are ALOT harder to ride at a FAST pace than dirtbikes [anyone can ride either at a slow pace, is that really riding?], Bikes were designed to go fast, ATV's werent [even the sport ones have their design fall-backs] You are basically saying that a skilled rider on a Hybusa [sp?] can take a F1 racer because of skill, THIS IS NOT SO!!!!! Bikes are faster because of DESIGN it has nothing to do with rider\operator ABILITY! Any CHUMP can move a boulder with a excavator, But a real MAN can move it by HAND, get the picture?

Here I go, off on a rant......This is directed at EVERYONE, but NO-ONE in particular...I may be wrong, but hey, free speach is a b!tch!

This is a common/almost valid gripe, Although anyone with SKILL will be able to over come this [not saying you dont have any, But I am TIRED of this cr@p between dirtbikers and atvers, WE SHOULD BE WORKING TOGHETHER! We CAN use the same tracks, We DO use the same trails, And we MUST JOIN TOGETHER TO OVERCOME THESE ENVIROMENTAL CREEPS THAT JUST WANT TO SHUT DOWN OHV USAGE ALL TOGETHER! I hear more CRAP about other OHV operators from people within the sport than I do from the enviro-creeps! If they want to brand us all together, then STAND TOGETHER! If we dont do this, there will me no more MX or ATV MX or Truck hillclimb comps, or whatever, It will all be video games and memories!

Anyways, theres 1.20 from me [ a bit more than .02 anyways] Like I said, not directed at anyone, just something for EVERYONE to thing about...

I hate this. It is a insult to everyone who owns\operates an OHV.

I agree totally I have motorcycles and a quad and I enjoy riding both. I do have more fun on the bikes but ridin is ridin. We have to band together or the tree huggers will have them all out outlawed before we know what hit us.

COME ON! This subject is pointless. Quads will kill you? Pla-leese, either one can harm you if ridden beyond the machine's or riders ability. Just look at how many serious injuries are reported on this sight, from BIKES! My group rides both DB's and quads and nobody has been hurt in years. Everyone gears up, rides safe and has fun, which is what it's all about. This infighting has to stop.

This thread is long overdone...

While I disagree that we CAN share the same track ( on the same day at least) I do agree that we are all after the same thing as far as riding issues, and need to fight together, not against. To add to the track issue, I don't really care about the adults on the track when it comes to the 4 wheelers ruining the corners, but when the track gets slippery the kids ( and begginers for that matter) really need those ruts to keep from washing their wheel. Besides, from what I hear quads really need a different track set up ( lower trajectory jumps, and small whoops ) to be safe. I don't have have any malice towards quads, I just think some things don't mix that well. Just my opinion

Ok, I have a question, what would you rather have on your track, quads or golfers/hikers/horses?
Because if this very divisive attitude from some of you (DBs are ok, everyone riding anything else go away) doesn't get fixed, the local tracks will have golfers on it in a few years.
When we snub quad riders, we're loosing much of the little political muscle we have. I've personally seen very good quad riders at Loretta Lynn's, and on some tracks they can post faster times than my B-class-rider son on his CR125 can.
They're not slobs any more than the DB jerks wearing no helmet and cutting through my property, cutting the fence and leaving trash behind them, then telling me to "Go to H$ll" when I stop them for trespassing.
We need to fix this one. Same crap has happened for years in regards to guns. The duck hunters/trap/skeet shooters think the action pistol shooters are trash, and handguns should be banned, not respectable, no sir. The handgunners think auto weapons are for killing only, not respectable, no sir, only drunks and soldier wannabes have them.
Result? division in the ranks, same as here, makes it harder to fight the REAL ENEMY.
But like someone said years ago, we have seen the enemy and it is US.

Quads are fine. It's the rider that causes the anomosity.

I was out riding this past weekend and saw 2-wheel riders riding in shorts and sneakers or jeans and sneakers and t-shirts. I saw quad riders in full gear. and vice-versa.

Granted quad riders do have more "rider gear error" and have a group that cannot ride 2-wheelers but lets not generalize. Instead try and edify the riders when you can.

I bring old riding boots and other gear and give them to riders I see riding without. This site is so predudice against quads it makes me saddened.

Judging all in a group by individual experience is always wrong. If you are not trying to educate them you are part of the problem.

It’s simple really; buy a quad to make the track that you ride your dirt bike on. Nothing more discuss. Quads are good work horses, use them wisely and don’t mess around on them.

My first bike had four wheels. After I learned how to ride, my dad pulled off the training wheels. Hahahahaha!
I'm sorry, I had to say that. There are idiots in both sports, and as far as I'm concerned, they can keep on riding without helmets. Those bozo's can have their Darwin awards, we will keep the trophies.
I have no personal gripe about quads, as long as they don't ride on my hard earned, single track, hare scramble loop. Making it six feet wide, and no challenge is not my idea of fun. Has not happened yet though, so let the responsible quads rock on.

Is this some kind of a joke? Who the hell wants ruts in the turns? I'm extatic when a quad shows up (very rare here in Finland, you see maybe 1 quad in a month if you go to the track every Saturday and Sunday) and levels the turns..

Who wants ruts in the corners? Anyone who wants go fast! An inside rut ( or outside for that matter sometimes ) in the corner is the express lane of cornering. Rail an inside rut or slide through the middle of the turn, to me its a no brainer. Even if the corner has a good outside berm I'll bet the inside rut is still faster 75% of the time. I did forget though that quads make great track dryers.

A mate was nearly killed when he was young, and riding an ATV, It flipped on him and the paramedics said that the thing that proabably saved his life was the dip in the seat. If riding in the same conditions on a dirtbike, and he did flip - IMO less likely - it is much easier to get out of the way, and if the bike did land on him it would have hit him with a force of 200lbs versus 400lb+ - a big difference

While I disagree that we CAN share the same track ( on the same day at least) I do agree that we are all after the same thing as far as riding issues, and need to fight together, not against.

Ditto on that point
