I had an '00 CR250, which was said at the time to have had better low end than the '01, and I own an '05. The '05 has a better motor than the '00 bottom to top. Just clearly more powerful across the board.

I had a '99 cr250 that had a very strong bottom and mid. But zero top. As long as it was short shifted it kept up pretty well with the newer bikes. Comparing it to the recent 250's is no comparison, though. What little the new bikes give away on the bottom, if any, is more than made up with the much stronger mid and top. There is probably a 3-5hp gain on top from the 2nd generation aluminum framed years.

Are you guys riding the same bikes I am ? My '01 had more bottom than my MODIFIED '05 - are sure your '01's were jetted out ? My '05 is WAY better midrange and up, no comparison there. For serious moto work I'd rather be on the '05. Had an '04 for half a season - NO BOTTOM there - kept racing my '01, but the '05 has decent bottom, not great - anemic compared to the '04 and '05 YZ, but makes up for it in the mid and upper revs.

I have an 01 and find it has more than I'll ever need (I race B class MX and HS). If you find either lacking on low end power I suggest downshifting or taking riding lessons (seriously, the best mod you can make).

i had on 'o1. sucked, no bottom end. tons of top end though. you could put an vforce2 reeds intake, which you could change the tension from bottom end to top end, and you wouldnt beleive the difference. stock pipe with bills silencer, fastest bike ive ever owned. or you could pull the cylinder and gasket, and put yamabond down for a gasket, and thats the backyard mechanic way of seeing what your engine will do with .020" off the botttom of cylinder. youd be amazed at bottom end.

Bad jetting will kill bottom end - guess what - the stock '01 jetting sucked ! Once jetted out the '01 is a great motor - speaking of Eric Gorr - in his book he claims the '01 CR is the best of the 250 2-stroke engines !
