ATTITUDE??? No one knows it better than me!!
I remember a guy named "wrench" a few years back that was confused when he went to flame a guy. What he did wrong was ...(does anyone remember?) Flame some guy named OKIE instead of the guy that he was really mad at ("kawidude" or something like that). Before he had realized his mistake, many members (including Okie) had read the post and "piled on"! Anyway, after an apology and an explaination he was forgiven .. I think that he even got the flappin fender/truespode award at the 1st MWSF.
The moral of my story is this ... ATTITUDE? you bet it actually is what sets this site apart from others. Hell, I even fell pray to the "in crowd itis" at last years DW. I still pop in every now and then, only with my tail between my legs, LOL. Which is the whole point ... it IS like a big family ... we have fun, we fight, we forgive and forget! (BSMITH you and I have had this discussion before, it is just "cycling" again). well that is my .02.

Speaking of the Elk camp, if you were afraid to enter, you had plenty of company. The dingos, lobsters and flying f'ing spiders drove out all but the brave! I walked around DW 2 and 3 and all I saw were open doors and welcome mats. There will always be people that are afraid to try and join in on the fun. We are all different, some of us more than others. DRN was a little scary at first, when trying to post for the first time, knowing that EVERYONE sees what you type. But if you have even half a brain or personality, it's easy to get involved.

I'll say it again as has been said by many before, I'm here because there is 0% chance of finding any crap on this site. Try going to your local mx site, we all have them, and see what these jerks yack about. "I'm the fastest you f'er, come on out and I'll kick your ass!" You either follow the rules and be respectful or your ass gets the boot, no if's and's or but's. I was told to take it down a notch with a joke I posted, I got the idea and blended in just fine. Hell, Thump banned me from the site just to flex his little biceps, I got the idea and shot him at DW with a paintball gun. :)

No Mod on this site is out of line, they don't put up with BS, don't listen to it, nor let it take up space. Most of us can spot a troll, but they are in the position to do something about it. This place is run like a fine machine, there's a wealth of information, far beyond what most can comprehend, but there's also a wealth of entertainment and jabbing. That's what we do after a ride and that's what spills onto the boards. If you ain't having fun, you're doing something wrong.

My advice, don't change a thing.

After reading some of this thread, I'll give ya my take on it all.

If anyone is bitching about how cliquey this place is, next time you go ride with your mates, at the end of the day don't join in the conversation, just pretend you don't know any of these guys. Or get someone new to join the group & watch them. I was sitting watching our group today & thinking about this thread. There's one guy getting crap for being fat, there's a couple of guys getting sunk into for being broken, there's me being hassled for being slow, another guy being hassled for being "a funny little man riding a strange bike", another being hassled for being anal about everything etc etc etc etc. If you open your mouth & say the wrong thing, you'd better be ready to have it thrown back at you. If you've forgotten some of your riding gear, everyone will then look around to see if they've got something spare or if you need gas or anything else, someone's bound to have it. You just need to ask and have the right attitude (fun).

I agree some threads are just too much bull****, so as soon as I see it, I just switch off. some of the jokes I get, most I don't understand, some I think I read something different into. I know I've read some threads and thought they were hilarious but found out later (Jaybird) that it was actually a serious dig at someone. I'd just read them differently & thought nothing of them.

As for feeling left out, I enjoy reading ride reports & seeing everyone picking on everyone (as friends), it's just typical dirtbiker mentality. You'd see the same thing anywhere you go, just not a lot is done online.

Take what information your brain can handle processing & learn from it, ignore the threads where the topic has been lost so long ago & treat it as you would your friends (minus the cussing and probably a bit nicer lol).

there are plenty of good people here and I think you'd be amazed by what goes on behind the scenes that you'll never find out about. I've seen some things but I'm sure a lot more happens too :)

Michelle, I feel now like I probably accomplished what I set out to do. If I post a dig or jab at someone, it will not be without just cause. Or at least what my feeble mind would consider just cause. I have always found that adding a bit of satire makes it even more satisfying.
I would hope that the post you refer to was the “KDX’er of The Year” thread. It was some of my best material. :rotfl:

I’m really not a mean spirited person, even though I know I come off as such often.
I love life, people, and all that they imply. That is why I love this place.
It has melded into a community of people from all walks of life and backgrounds, peppered with different ideologies, and all coming together for a common purpose.
DRN is by far the best place I’ve seen for folks to share, not only their common interest, but also their life experiences; good, bad or indifferent. It’s the real world, which is rare for something that originates from an electronic box.

What makes DRN even better is the fact that we often get opportunities to actually meet one another. I have yet to attend a DRN ride or a DirtWeek that I found even one person that I did not like. Many times our on-line personality comes off as a bit different as to what we really are like in person.
I highly recommend anyone here to attend DirtWeek if they possibly can.

I remember at my first DirtWeek I was a bit apprehensive as to how folks would accept me. I had been around DRN long enough for folks to get a taste of my dry wit and sometimes caustic attitude, and I was a bit afraid that meeting in person would allow an opportunity for folks to really give me a piece of their minds. However, I found that not only were folks fantastic to meet and ride with, some of them were actually the best folks I’ve ever met.
I knew right away that Okie and Thump was good people just from the firmness of their handshake and sincerity in their voices. After meeting Pokie and Shiftless, I knew that Bob had been brought up well and had some good role models that molded him. Folks like that tend to surround themselves with like people to begin with.

I knew Rich was a person that I wanted to meet, and I’m sure he probably doesn’t even remember meeting me because he was too busy fixing Billy’s stuff to be real cordial. But I found that even though some may find him a big tool on-line, he is one of those people that are always smiling. He seemed like one of those folks who would rather help you than eat when he was hungry. He also reminded me of a teacher that I had in high school that was a bit odd, but his passion for what he did, and his passion to help others gain from his knowledge, made it so that you couldn’t help but love the guy.
Each and every person I met at my first DirtWeek was great and I can honestly say that I will always treasure the experience. The next two DirtWeeks were even better, and I’m certain the pattern will continue.

I could ramble on and on about the folks I have met at DRN gatherings and there wouldn’t be one bad story to tell.
I spent several months smack talking with Elk before I first met the guy, and you’d have thought we were really at each other’s throats, but two seconds after we met in person we embraced each other in a hug. (Don’t even go there, Twinny! We are both men that are comfortable with our sexuality!) Of course it was a “man hug”.

I know that IrishEKU has made folks hate to see that he has posted in a thread, and I myself have spent many a line thrashing the guy here. But, after meeting him in person and riding with him, I found that he wasn’t such a bad guy after all. In fact he was sort of enjoyable to be around. (Even though he’s just as much a suck-up in person as he is on-line.)

My point is that often times our on-line personalities won’t quite match how we are perceived in person. I think it takes that human contact to complete a relationship. Many have great relationships with people here and have never, nor will ever, meet them. Just think how much better it would be to actually meet.
There is something about breaking bread and bones with your fellow human that tends to bond us more than we can understand.

“In-crowd”… “Outsider” (shrug)… I’m not sure there are such things at DRN. Sure, there are going to be folks that come here that are complete a-holes, but they tend not to hang around long enough for it to matter.
Like Tony, I find myself to be a bit shy and stand-offish when I first meet someone or a group of people in person for the first time. But the people that I’ve met at DRN will not allow you to be that way for long. As a matter of fact, I’ve found them to be some of the most accepting people I’ve ever encountered.

I have to throw my vote with Carlo…. don’t change a thing, Bob. It’s working quite nicely.

late comer to the thread...but I read almost all of it.

I see a few negative comments regarding off topic forums. Just want to put in my opinion about that.

We all come from different backgrounds, but have 1 thing in comming...an interest in dirt bikes. I would like to think there is more to each of us than the "dirt bike" sector of our life. Some members (like myself) have been into dirt bikes so long, that we are less than enthusiastic (burnt out) on many of the dirt bike related discussions. We know what we like, and what we don't like. We have already figured out what bikes and products we want to use. At this point, I learn a bit here and there about the new bikes, and enjoy helping others when I feel I can. Other than that, there's the off topic forums.

Sad to see the Flame forum go. It was doomed anyway once it was deemed for dirt bike related topics only. Hopefully the off topic forum isn't next.

It is understood that off topic type forums generate more of a pain in the pooper for the mods. This is natural. People feel more strongly about war, Dodge vs. Chevy, crappy drivers, etc. than they do regarding jetting and tire choices. Most of the posters weeded out in these forums aren't really compliant with the spirit of DRN anyway. They show their true colors, and get the big SIDI or Alpinestar in the rear.

Off topic forums add another dimension to DRN, which is appropriate because each and every one of us is more than just a dirt biker.
