My club has just commited to promote the 1st Annual Furnace Hare Scramble at Prairie City OHV on September 21, 2003.

To our knowledge, this will be the only AMA Hare Scramble in Northern California that has an entire race dedicate to women riders. The 4th race of the day will have 3 women's classes: 0-125cc, 125cc and up; and a special beginners class for first-time racers. No men on the course, no kids on the course... it will be dedicate to women riders.

It's is a 3.5 mile hare scramble course (in the much less rocky section of Prairie City), Le Mans start, computer scoring, a formal 45 minute AMA sanctioned event.

We feel like a lot of women riders are looking for this opportunity and we will do our best to provide a quality event.

Natalie - Hope you are able to come and ride in the event. The course will be awesome... the rangers have even agreed to water down the dusty sections!

Kawi-dude - no men's races this time, the event will have 3 youth races (15 and under) and 1 women's race. These are the main events - not races shoe-horned in between the sportsmen events. We think there are lots of other opportunities for the men throughout the year and this is the opportunity to showcase and support the women and youth riders. However... the rest of the park will be open for public riding AND the area we use will be opened after the last race.

Of course the men folk are always welcome to flag or ride sweep, we can always use the assistance!

Everybody starts with their bike off. When the flag drops, you have to start your bike and then ride like hell...

The Le Mans start is where you stand 10-15 feet away from your bike and after the shot gun goes off you run to your bike. get it started and then race away. We are using this for 2 very specific reasons, it is fun and it spreads out the start. This makes the first corner MUCH less crowded which lowers the anxiety level quite a bit. With a 45 minute race there is plenty of time to "catch up" to the fast starters. I would guess that most bikes are kick started.

I know there is a lot of interest but a little apprehension out there about hare scrambles - mostly because they are usually run with the men's C class. This will be the absolute best opportunity to see if you like this type of event. Most people that try it have an excellent time.

As mentioned the course will not be too technical, just creative. Most of the course will be very wide for safe passing. We will try to get most of the course marked (the parts that are accessible) at least 2 weeks before the race so you can check it out.

The AMA card - yes, since it is an AMA sanctioned event the card will be required and sold by D-36 at the event. This is an AMA requirement for their risk management support and liability coverage. The card is good for a full year and can be used at all AMA events including all D-36 races and family enduros and... the 3 race Youth/Women series we are considering for next Summer if this race is as successful as we hope!

Just in... we will have trophies for the top 3 finishers in every class and finisher pins for everyone, additionally Moose Racing has come through big time on contingency prizes for the Women's classes!!! We will try to award finisher prizes to every rider in the beginners class.

Well, odds are looking good that The Ant and E-Ticket may be driving down from Portland, OR to take part! :yeehaw:

AND if we do... Ellen aka "Pegasus" had better show! :)

Since we're from out of state, a couple of questions:
-- how far is the race site from Sacramento?
-- Susan's BBR-230 has a USFS spark arrestor, has tested at 92db, and has current Oregon ORV tags... but how does all this play with the "Red/Green Sticker" business?
-- Have current AMA card. Do we just pay an extra $5 for the D-36 thing? Can we do that at registration? Or does it need to be done ahead of time?
And 'cause we're from Oregon - can we be excused....? :laugh:

Looking foward to watching The Ant racin' with Natalie, Jennifer, FireLily, Fe-P, Ellen.... and the list goes on and on.....

Out of state registration is fine, just be sure it is are current, this bypasses the whole red/green issue. Everything else is cool with your bike.

The D-36 1 day card is $5 and included in the $30 entry fee if you register that way, otherwise we can take care of it the day f the event. We will surely honor our Oregon riders with something special!

Prarie City is on the outskirts of Sacramento - maybe 10-15 minutes.

More big breaking news is on the way regarding sponsors!

Denise (are you logged in as SFO today?? LOL) Its up HWY 50 not too far, then look for the Prairie City OHV park sign on the right side of the hwy as you go toward Tahoe. Its still in Sacramento.

Well we were out working on the course all day, it is really shaping up. We are up to about 3.6 miles with some very fun sections. We plan on naming a few of the fun areas.... "The Elevator", "The Precipice" and "The Outback" are looking good.

We tried installing airconditioning around the course but couldn't get a long enough extention cord ;) .

I'll post a map to Prairie City in a couple of weeks.

Furnace HS Update

The course is now marked at Prairie City. It's about 4 1/2 miles long and lap times will be in the 10-12 minute range, you can expect 3-4 laps. We are also prepared to do a course split for the beginner's class, routing around a slightly technical area, we will wait until race day to decide based on your feedback. If a couple of local riders want to get together with us on September 6th to test ride that section just PM me and I'll provide the details.

FYI, we now have a commitment by the park ranger to water most of the course the night before the race, it will be a fun ride.

Hi Loco,
Is there any chance you'll have a longer race for the more experienced women? Something more than an hour would be nice if we're driving down from Portland.... people will be just getting warmed up at 4 laps!

My guess is that everyone will be pretty warmed up after 1 lap!!!

The race is an all out sprint for 45 minutes. Think of it as a 45 minute motocross pace on a cross country course with everything from an MX track to tight single track to wide open desert style trails. The number of laps will actually be dependent on race speed. When we tested on Sunday the fastest youth riders were covering it in 7-8 minutes if you can keep this pace it will be more like 7 laps. I guarentee that you will be happy to see the checkered flag after 45 minutes! On the other hand, this is our last race of the day and if the racers support it, we can easily extend the race to 1 hour or more.

The rest of the park will be open for riding before and after the race and we will open the track up when we are done.

If you are interested in a little more riding just drop me a note - we can work something out.

BTW, I am one of the male "support-units" who will be supporting a female racer (aka, "The Ant").

a) I think this is so cool that you are doing this type of format for the youth and women riders! :yeehaw: Why, we think it's cool enough to drive ~ 650 miles to do this race! :scream:
And heck ... who knows where this might lead! :thumb:

b) I would be willing to flag or sweep as I will be bringing my scoot. I also understand that the focus and purpose of the day is for the Youth/Women Racers... and promise not to bitch about, "....what about us guys..???" :(

c) I am also very interested in being able to ride the course/area after the race is over. So thank you very much for thinking about that! :)
