Help!! Need advice on 87 KDX200 shift problem.

The bike will no longer shift from neutral into first. Started gradually with multiple stomps on the shift required to get it into first from neutral. What's weird is it shifts easily from second into first. Would love to get some advice on which component has most likely failed. Really hope I don't need to split the cases.

***Update***

I've now removed the clutch side engine cover and unfortunately the external shifting mechanisim seems to be completely intact. Looks like it's case splitting time.

Take off the right side engine cover and compare what you see to the pictures in the manual.

That was going to be the first step and I do have a manual. Then I was going to drain the tranny and see if I had any metal in the oil. Was actually hoping someone might have had a similar problem and would know exactly what failed. Still hoping to not have to split the case.

You should drain the oil before taking the right side engine cover off. It'll drain either way, but be a WHOLE lot neater using the oil dain bolt. :-)

See if the spring on the neutral set lever has come off or broken.
