I need PC help

My PC starts up fine then goes straight to 'My Documents' ive been playing with various settings as i love to fiddle and i dont know how ive done this-Its running windows XP.Im sure its just a setting which i need to find-please help i hate it when things dont do exactly as i want.(my bike/fiance/life come under this catagory but i only want to fix the PC-for now );)

Marcus-I'm pretty much a computer spode but I'll take a shot at it. I am guessing that you may have added this program (Windows Explorer) to run in your start menu. I can't get more specific than that because I don't know how it works, but it may be a start. Good luck.

Right click the Start button.
Select Explore.
Select Start Menu.
Select Programs.
Select Start up.
Remove "My Documents" from the Start up Folder.

PS My Startup Folder is empty and my XP just comes up with the desktop.

Bswift ive done what you suggested but the start up folder is empty.
The all users startup folder had norton system doctor and Adobe gamma loader.exe- i wonder if thats doing it(it may have started doing this at a similar time to when i loaded Adobe Photoshop 6 but i might be wrong.

Sixth side i dont know what more i can tell you-when the pc start up it goes to my documents then i have to close the window down-it never used to do this-it used to start up and go to desktop like a normal pc.

wierd stuff

Not sure why the "my documents" folder would open if it is NOT in the "startup" folder. Double check that, just for kicks. Make sure there is not any program running on the task bar that could be doing it. But other than that man, I don't know wha to say. If I learn something ill let ya know.. sorry i couldnt help ya.. Make sure the shortcut isnt "hiden" in the "starup" folder

Here something interesting-ive opened up the start up folder and like i said i see 2 files-one norton system doctor(shortcut),one abobe gama.exe shortcut, but if i click on the folder and look at properties it says 3 files-i have clicked on the show hidden folders option but i dont see the 3rd file???

Start
Run
type:MSCONFIG
highlight: (fill the hole next to) selective startup
press "startup" tab at upper right
uncheck "my documents"
click "apply"

Making progress

I need more help,
ive used msconfig to determine its explorer thats causing this to happen
the command line is windows/system/system32/dllcache/explorer.exe
whats all that lot do?

Marcus,
Hi. Look in your startup folder by selecting Start, All Programs, Startup. If "My Documents" is present, right click on it, and remove it from the folder. XP has the ability to have multiple users, and any changes you make to your folder should be done while you are logged on. You will also find other settings available to you within the My Documents folder itself by launching it, and selecting 'Tools, Folder Options". Hope this helps.....

Smooth no mention of my docs in start up,i think i will leave explorer unticked in msconfig as this seems to fix it, but what will not having explorer start up with the pc do?Can anyone else check to see if they have explorer ticked in msconfig 'start up' this is the thing that makes it open up my docs but why has it started doing this recently?

Try logging in as another user, does that fix the problem ? You may have to recreate your primary profile if a key in the registry is corrupt or something. Just a thought

I do not have explorer on mine. I am using windows me not xp, don't think that makes much diff though.

Nope, explorer is not ticked or even listed on mine. You don't really NEED much of the stuff under startup except maybe systemtray and taskmonitor.

I'm running Windows 2000, not XP and I do have explorer.exe running in the task manager.

Yep thats the answer explorer should not be in start up-a friend has xp and no mention of explorer-so how did i get it in there-i bet we will never know,and i will i ever learn not to fiddle-i doubt it.

Thanks Vic. I got rid of AIM and MSM in two clicks.

Try this--

Control-alt -delete, a window will pop up with everything that is open / running.
Close everything except systray and explorer.

I have to do this when I run a serious defrag other wise these back ground programs keep running and stopping the process.
Then re-boot.

I have learned that defrag will run with far fewer problems and restarts if I do it in safe mode. I only have to turn off the screen saver this way. Defrag even seems to run faster in safe mode.

I agree with that completely. I do this every 3 months or so, and my PC rarely gives me any trouble. I can't remember the last time I saw a blue screen.

Did you get your computer straightened out Marcus. If you are running XP and were playing with the settings I think you can go back to a specific date when the settings were the way you wanted them. Click start\ all programs\Accessories\system tools\and click system restore. Choose the day when your puter was working the way you want it and restore to those settings. You may lose a little data collected between that day and present but it should bring you back to where you want to be.:)

A couple days after I got my new computer I was playing with settings and got it jacked up. It was a quick fix for me. Just backed it up two days and everything went back to original.

Senior KX yes i just took explorer out of the start up in msconfig as well as a few others and its now fine- i think ive moved the explorer shortcut into another folder by mistake.I really should lean to not mess about but its my nature- iwas even cleaning up some files on the work pcs today and they are on a network and i will be in deep poo if they stop working.Love to meddle:p
If i didnt break things once in a while i would have nothing to fix.:confused:

I dont like to use the rewind function as im always dowloading silly programs like adaware ot neo trace and i will loose them-anyway thats far too simple.
