I VE HAD PROBLEM WITH THE AIR FILTER.
EVEN IF I VE ALWAYS KEEP IT CLEAN AND I VE USED VERY FLUID OIL TO PROTECT IT FROM SAND AND DIRT,SOME VERY FINE SAND CAME INTO THE AIRBOX AND FINALLY KILLED MY CILINDER,PISTON,AND OTHER ENGINE PARTS.
THIS HAPPEN FOR 2 TIMES!
DID ANYONE HAS THE SAME PROBLEM WITH THE XR 650 R?
I THINK THE FILTER POSITION IS NOT PARTICULARY WELL MADE.

first: easy on the caps lock

Second: is your filter making a good seal around the opening in airbox? it doesn't matter how good the filter is if it doesn't seal.

Never had that problem. I always check for rips and deterioration at every cleaning and use an abundant amount of grease around the edges. The stock filter did start to sperate fairly early, but I have had no problems with the replacement.

Also - if you went with the power-up intake manifold, be sure it is well sealed.
