My KDX puts off a ton of white smoke there is no oil in the tranny could it be rings or is it crank case seals ...How difficult is it to replace piston and rings ??

You're describing a typical symptom of a blown clutch-side crankshaft seal. Replacing piston & rings is not too hard, assuming you are not mechanically challenged. Replacing the crank seal is a much bigger job. Search this forum for both subjects and you'll find a plethora of info. Also look at http://justkdx.dirtrider.net/ - good info and pics there.
