If they split it evenl;y you can have a set of earrings made for speedy for Xmas :clue: . At least it would be a gift from your heart or the general area.

I had 3 stones pop up back in 2002 just a day after my knee surgery and they made the pain of the knee seem minute. Nothing like hearing a stone bounce off porcelin just before your knees buckle.

My Dr prescribed lots of water and cranberry juice as preventatives and to do a lot of walking.

BTW... I'm with you on the pain meds... I don't take anything either, other than Bayer aspirin for arm pump. I bet the experience is wierd. The only thing I've had is Valium and I metabolized that in 2 hours... it should have lasted MUCH longer.

dang Ed, stones and a bad reaction to the good drugs! I'm not shure redryders detalied explination of the process helps much. I prefer pre surgery ignorance dosed out with good stuf. Good luck old buddy. What was that old elk used to say..shaking like a poodle passing a peach pit! :yikes:

Yeeeooowwww! 5.5mm!? That AIN'T good! Hope it get's blasted and the pain goes away. When we went on a mission trip to Grenada, our preacher got kidney stones worse than I've ever seen. It was nonstop screaming, puking, etc. due to the pain. Having to be admitted to a hospital in a third world country was not the ideal situation. So remember...it can always be worse! :yikes: Now, that made you feel all better didn't it. ;)

I can sympathize with ya man. 2 Years ago in the middle of the night I woke up and for the next 2 hours was doubled over in pain. I dont mean little girly "my stomach hurts" pain but the "someone sucker punching you right in the gut" over and over kind of pain. I too ended up in the ER for the evening. That is funny that you had that kind of reaction to the pain meds. All I remember was it was warm going in and for the next 2 hours I was in and out of conciuosness but what I do remember it was kinda cool. Got sent home and for 2 days went thru a strainer until my little "stoner" popped out. About the size of a sesame seed so I cant even begin to imagine one 4 to 5 times that big.

I feel for ya man. Been there done that and DONT want to do it again. Get well man.

Here is my brothers kidney stones. He hit him on the flight home from Guam so that made for a painful flight. Took 2.5 days to pass. He figured it was from all the ice tea he drank to say hydrated over the 3 month stay. Hope you feel better Eddie!

Update number 2:

I thought yesterday was the day for me and 'stoney' to part ways, alas it was not to be. From what I gather he was blocking my kidney so they knocked me out, stuck a breathing tube in me and shoved a 1" (thats what it feels like inside me anyway) piece of tubing inside me. About 5 minutes after getting home I couldn't take the percecet fast enough. Yesterday was by far the most pain I've been in yet. Aimee had to help me to the bathroom where I thought I would surely end my time on earth. I don't think there was anything but blood coming out of me all day yesterday and I only have about 5 seconds of warning beforehand. There is an incredible pain up inside from the tube whenever the pressure builds up. I now have to wait until Tuesday for the big breakup party! Up until yesterday I had managed to cowboy up and avoid the percocet....that has all changed now as I was turned into a bawling baby and humbled beyond belief lol.

I felt so awful for Eddie yesterday. He was in agony and there was nothing I could do. :( We are so extremely fed up with Doc's and Nurses at this point. Everyone ranted and raved about this Urologist but the man is drving us nuts! He says one thing one minute then something completely opposite the next, then tries to act like he never told us the latter in the first place. :pissed:
At the Dr.'s office on Tuesday he said the stone was too low and he was going to have to push it up some to be in the optimal area for 'blasting'. Then come Thursday after putting the stint in Eddie he comes out to tell me everything went well, the stint is in (pats himself on the back). I say "so the stones are all gone?" he says "oh no, the stone is too high to do anything about yet". I'm like WTF??!!! Then I asked him if he told Eddie this before putting him under. He hadn't told Eddie a damn thing so I had to be the bearer of bad news when Eddie woke up. Poor thing thought he was going to wake up and this would all be over, only to find out instead of being LESS one foreign object in his body, he had one ADDED and is in MORE pain now than before!!
Why can't Doctor's and Nurses just be honest? Why can't they tell you what's going on? It feels like a big scam. We're going on our 4th fuggin trip to the hospital. (I can just hear the cash register drawer opening everytime we go through those doors)
And another thing, what ever happened to compassion? If you're going to be a medical professional you better damned well know how to deal with people in PAIN!! Grrrrrr.

Sounds like this guy doesn't know how to talk to a patient, so I'll just tell you what he's doing.

The stone probably moved into the proximal ureter and obstructed, causing 'hydro' (hydronephrosis)--backpressure against the kidney. Of course, the kidney doesn't like this, and nephron ;) injury can start in hours, potentially affecting that kidney's function permanently. You're not at risk of going into kidney failure, since you only need one, but it's a semi-emergency to get it 'unobstructed'. You do that by shoving those large, painful J-stents up the ureters past the stone to relieve pressure against the kidney, allowing it to work normally. That's step 1, and the most common step 1 these guys do (I'm not a Urologist, and certainly don't think like one ;) ). Then they 'schedule' you for an outpatient lithotripsy, provided you're not sick from infection associated with the stone. Now, you don't want to litho a stone jammed in the ureter as that would rupture the ureter, most likely. You can't go up and get it with a basket (basket retrieval), because it's probably too large to pull out. What he MAY be thinking about doing is a ureteroscopy, to push the stone back up into the renal pelvis so he can litho it. The stent just allows urine to flow, but really doesn't have much to do with the stone itself.

So here's what you can expect: He'll litho this thing, which will turn it into 'smaller' pieces that you can pass. Then he'll most likely have you come back in a week or so to remove the stent and see whether stone fragments remain.

That's the end of it, provided you see a nephrologist . If you don't, you'll be sorry, and at risk of another stone. In the MEANTIME, here's some general advice for anyone out there with calcium stones:

1) Take in at least 2L of fluid, including drinking at night
2) Limit soda pop....best off if NONE. Phosphoric acid increases calcium excretion
3) NO grapefruit or grapefruit juice
4) Vitamin Budweiser--a beer a day reduces stone formation by 40%
5) Low'ish' protein diet--low animal protein, higher vegetable based protein
6) Low SODIUM diet. Calcium follows sodium. Nothing in a can, pre-prepared foods (like TV dinners or 'healthy choice'), etc. A complete list of things salty can probably be found at NKF.org.
7) DO NOT restrict your calcium intake
8) You may need to take Uro-Cit K, Bicitra, Thiazide or something else to help as well, depending on how you do.

I understood the purpose of the stent but the Doc has not been real clear on what he planned/plans to do about the stone.

He is currently scheduled for a lithotripsy on Tuesday. My fear is if this thing didn't move any between the ER visit on Sat and putting the stent in yesterday, what makes him think it's going to have moved down any by Tuesday. What if it hasn't moved? He can't go on like this much longer.

And do a girl a favor and leave the beer remedies/preventative medicine out of it next time. ;)

This is hilarious, I just got off the phone with someone from the hospital. She wondered why I had scheduled the lith but not my pre-surgery visit? WHAT? She explained that they needed me to fill out some paperwork and get my medical history, run some tests etc. Haven't these people heard of computers. I've filled out more paperwork than you can imagine on each visit. They have at least 3 sets of everything already. I've pee'd in cups and had blood taken 3 times also. Aimee is right, they are going to get every penny possible out of me and the insurance company.
