My 87' KDX has a leak on the right side where the exhaust valve rod protrudes from the engine. I was wondering if I coud remove the backing plate and pull out and replace the oil seal without having to remove the head. Also, I'm wondering if that oil seal is included in any gasket sets, especially MOOSE. Any help would be great.

I have just completed the same job on my '89. If the arrangement is the same just pull the kips cover, remove the circlips and collar from the governer rod, undo the screw retaining the guide and pull it off the shaft.
Replace both the seal and the o-ring.
Reverse to reassemble.

It is possible to remove the oil seal without taking off the head or anything else. I just removed the c-clips, backing plate, and andvancer linkage. With all of this removed it is easy to pull out the oil seal. I tried this last night and it worked. Thanks for the info.
