Hi

I just bought myself a secondhand 2003 Honda CR 250 R. It was running fine initially with some oil coming out of the exhaust. After about 2 hours of riding it stopped running completely. I have checked and petrol is flowing from the tank to the carberutor and there is spark, although the spark plug is a bit oily. I have cleaned the spark plug and also opened and cleaned the carb as per the service manual but it is still not starting.

Is there anybody that have some ideas as to what this could be.

Thanks
JP

Did you try a new plug? If the bike hasn't been rejetted to fix the factory rich condition (oily exhaust) then you probably just fouled the plug. If it starts with a new plug then you'll need to rejet the carb. The CR's come with a s9 nozzle which is way too big, so start by ordering the s7 nozzle which isn't an option from Honda so search under '98 yamaha yz125. Hope this helps.

+1 on the jetting. My '01 cr250 was rich and spooged and fouled plugs all the time. Don't 'clean' the plug just put a new one in and I bet it'll run. I get my plugs from Autozone. I think it's a BR8ES. Then fix your jetting. I put in a JD jet kit and it was perfect. If you get a kit make sure you ask if your bike needs the needle jet. The regular kit doesn't come with one but they will get you one if you call them.

These bikes do leave the floor very rich. 420 main jet that's a bit accessive. Depending on where you are, in JHB you'll need to drop down to a 370 (99143-KZ4-3700) or 380 (99143-KZ4-3800) and replace the jet needle with a 38-74 (16205-KZ3-L32). I had a 390 main jet in mine and it still soiled the spark plug with oil. You'll also notice the bike spit quite a bit from bottom to mid if it's running to rich.
