Rice burners

I tell you what, even though i am only 14 I can tell you so much about rice burners, where i live there are quite a few, and i am already setting one up for myself, but considering i dont have a job, its going slowly, but i have a 99 acura 3.2TL, And i dont know if this is the same as "ratchet shifting" but it has something called an auto stick, which is cool, you just have 4 gears, and tap the shifter to change them, and if you just move the shifter up a few times, it goes back to normal. But back to the car, with some aftermrket engine parts, a system, rims, and airbag suspension, it will be kick ass, i mean i dont see how any of you can not like those rice burners, i guess an acura isnt one, but it is still an import, if you go and buy a euro car magazine, some of the cars are pretty impressive, and the money that is won from a car show, might change you mind about them too:cool:

Stupid monster tach's

To get back to the subject of flaming those little, irritating, lowered, noisy,
usually slow, over stickered, rediculously large-rear-winged (and totally ineffective), lane-swapping, accident-causing (usually due to immature,inexperienced,cocky, wannabe indy driver poseurs trying to show-off)rice-roaches....... I just want to say that I live and drive, in and next to the American home of the souped up civic(and integra), wreckless driver capital of the U.S., Garden Grove, Ca. . I just think its absolutely hilarious when they mount those Autometer tachs right next to the left window in "obvious"
plain wiew of everyone EXCEPT the kid driving the car.That particular mounting location must be very important for optimum power and speed.:silly:
I have been cut-off numerous times by these dangerous lane-swapping speeders, and just
wish that they'd use their heads and take it somewhere else like to the street races, or REAL races. Just not on busy freeways and streets. Sometimes I feel like running them over with my f-250 Diesel and stomping them out like little bugs. Oh well, I'm sure people felt that way about how I drove and what my car looked like when I was 16 yrs. old too.

hondaguy...well considering youve got 2 years before you can drive it shouldnt be too hard to put some stuff on it by then...also i'd go with coil-over suspension instead of the airbag. skunk2 racing has some nice coilovers w/ an adjustable 0-4" drop that perform pretty good. also it sounds like you have the standard shifter that just about every automatic car has except the ones that have shifter on the column...let me guess, the 4 gears you have are "L" for low, "2" for second, "D" for drive, and "O" or "OD" for overdrive? ricing out an automatic is pretty pointless anyways. you have to be able to shift at the best time to get the power out of them.

On my uncles new 5-series BMW it has a control for the automatic transmission where it winds the gears longer for drag racing.

yeah those bmw's are nice. i believe the new toyota tacoma's have an electric over-ride where you can adjust it to shift at higher rpm's but i'm not sure.

My mom's '91 mazda 626 (4-cyl) has the higher-rev button. They've been around forever. It just lets the car rev a little higher before shifting. I believe the Toyota trucks have had it since at least '91 (I think) if not before.

i know a lot of guys with late model toyotas and none of them have the high rev button...maybe it was just an option they didnt get? oh well its manual or nothin for me so its not somethin i wont have to worry about.

High rev button?? There is a "sport" button on my gf's old Nissan, basically changes at a higher rpm, not to big a deal.

I agree that American cars have their own personality and I am a big fan of them, but currently they are no match for the inovative technology going into the imports. How about Honda's VTEC? It gives a mild cam under 5000 for low emissions, excellent fuel economy and good drivability, and above 5000 it changes over to a much more aggressive profile cam that is noticeable in the seat of the pants. And VTEC has been around for a while now. I'm sure GM or Ford is only starting to catch up. Advantage: ...rice burner.

it doesnt actually change to a different cam does it? i thought it just built up more oil pressure to lift the valves higher?

VTEC, which stands for Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control, is an electronic system produced by Honda that can change the cam timing. The computer can activate alternate lobes on the camshaft at different engine speeds which allows the best features of low-speed and high-speed camshafts in the same engine. There are different forms of the VTEC system for different purposes.

ps.:) my little fat girl is a 01 chevy 2500HD with 8.1 under the hood,with 3 bikes on her and pulling trailor with 3 bikes and all gear for two familys camping for 4 days,going up hill she does'nt even come out of OD @ 70 mph can your civic do that?:) :) :)

I bet the 117ft/lbs of torque does wonders for those cars. LOL Great car with SOME power if you want to run the living crap out of them. I'd rather have all my peak torque at um....1800rpms :)

R white...lets see your chevy run a decent 1/4 mile time and take turns at twice the maximum posted speed limit for that particular turn. theres a big difference between torque/raw power, and speed/aerodynamics

It depends what you're looking for. I want my truck to have lots of low end torque, but I don't necessarily want that in my car (now that I'm a family man :think ). Back in the hot rod days...from the 60's (and even the 80's), there weren't that much technology in the engines of production cars to have them crank at 8000 rpm except in high dollar race engines.

Personally, I like the slingshot feeling when I'm in a light sportscar at the peak of the hp curve. Even better sensations if it's a turbo. I also love taking my gixxer up to 10k on the tach...BUT I also love the neck snapping low end torque of a Corvette out of the hole.

I would want my truck's peak torque to be at least 2800 actually for all practical senses so it doesn't wheeze out on acceleration and I bet it's better on the engine (that is unless you got a diesel or a lugging big block).
I would want my sportscar to peak hp and torque at least at 5000. Much more fun drivin!!

As far as having to drive the living crap out of the rice burners; I had a civic SI that went to 220K miles before I sold it and it still purred. The only hop up was a header and catback exhaust (no big coffee can exhaust tip). Only major replacement item was a new clutch and I didn't drive it like a pansy.
Can't say that about the mustang i had.

CR makes all the right points about the differences between the two. This whole argument is similar to what you see when people argue 2-stroke vs. 4-stroke. Both have their strengths and weaknesses, and it's really just a matter of preference.:D

It is apples and oranges my friends. I have a 66 El Camino with a 454 that's been worked a bit. Nothing like the feeling of over 475ft/lbs of torque and 528 HP! It all really depends where you want the power to go, straight or curves. Not too many cars I know can do both. I added some tighter suspension mods and it made the car stick nice on curves, (the big metal block up front helps alot) but had to give if I wanted to stick on a 1/4 mile. I don't get alot of body weight shift on take off so I suffer in the beginning of the drag but the power pulls through after I start rolling.

I've raced all sorts of cars, not by choice but they tend to pick on you when they my cam over their stereo! I play alot with people and don't get real worked up about it. I can't say I win them all, the new technology helps deliver the power to the ground. What really gets me laughing is the guy who buys a $70k Porsche or a $50k ZO6 Vette. Most of them have no respect for the power, they just want everyone to know how much they spent. When I beat them, they usually get pissed off and turn a corner, never to be seen again. I like chasing them up a hill and all they see is the grill of my car! Once again, you just have to have fun.

If a guy in a new Camaro SS of Vette gets the jump on me, it's tough to catch up with no traction but if I can't catch them, I respectfully pull up to them at the next light and try again, no attitude, just fun.

Rice burners have their place, they always will. Reliablility would have to be one of their better traits. I can't say that I'll get 200k out of my 454HO motor, but you know, it's twice the fun to drive so every mile counts double!!

Just my 2 pennies too. Hey Ktmboy, when I see you on the 13th, I'm gonna run your rice burner over! LOL!

The jap cars are like 125 and the V8 are like the 500 so now which one do you think would win a 1/4 mile race up a hill. THE 500 and it will always win no matter what.

I disagree, operator skill IS as important as displacement.

i agree completely...my friend smoked a guy w/ a brand new accord while he was in his 1983 toyota pos with 3 ppl in the cab. he's also got a '73 nova and he smokes most of the people around here. lol theres a 12 second minivan roll'n over here though and it spanked him

nope just the standard 22-R. it has an air filter and he did some carb mods so the barrels would open farther but thats all it has on it.
