Watch out for those older Dodge 2.2 turbo minivans. Those thing haul, I think they had 180HP and didn't weigh to much. I think if I was going to go with a small, everyday car. I"d grab a 323GTX or maybe a Dodge Omni GLH.

Who cares if your driving a car made in 1988, the guy in the 5.0 besides you won't be laughing after getting beat by a Mazda :)

yep im pretty sure this a a dodge 2.2 turbo...its all dumped rims and tires and a bunch of motorwork. it ran a low 12 in the 1/4. one of the only things in the area that i know of that is faster is a 9 second el camino. when my friend finishes his nova it will probably be running 10's

the majority of jap cars are made with fuel economy in mind, not power. this is why people do engine swaps when they want to go fast...and they can go fast. ive seen civics smoke tricked out corvettes, mustangs and just about any other american car you can think of. sure your mustang will pull ahead in a drag, but when you hit the curves youre gonna get tore up bad. in my opinion mustangs are crap, as is just about anything ford makes. my friend has a type-R and he smokes heavily modded mustang gt's left and right, and the only mods he has on it is a cold air induction, and exhaust. and considering he's working with half the cylinders as them...thats sad on their part.

the driver has a lot to do with it. you can have 800hp under your hood, but if you dont know how to control it youre just gonna be spinning the tires. being able to shift fast and at the perfect rpm is also important. and thats just for drag racing. once you hit the curves its a whole different story. knowing breaking and acceleration points going in and out of the turns and knowing where the fastest lines are is just as, if not more important than have a lot of power.

ive never seen a jap car in a ditch in my life...the only cars ive seen that cant handle turns are mustangs. i saw one in a ditch, one that took a turn too fast and ran into a tree, and another one that took a turn too fast and hit a fire hydrant. they must really stick to the road...

Treestomper- I've owned full sized Ford pickups (big blocks), mid-sized Chevys, Buicks, with sixes, Vws', a small Dodge 4 banger, a full size Dodge V-8, and currently own a Ford Explorer and a Honda Civic. The Explorer is a POS IMO!, but it's paid for, and will tow my bike. There is not a STOCK V-6 made that will run with my STOCK Civic! No, the Civic won't outrun a Mustang GT, a Z-28, a Corvette, or any 70s' vintage muscle cars, etc. But it will beat or run with just about anything else, and since it's just transportation, not a race car, that's good enough!
Slap a set of low profile tires on (the only modification I've done) and you have a slot car. Anyone that is spinning one of these cars off the road is just a spode! IMO, my Civic is the best handling, most fuel effecient, most reliable, and most fun vehicle I've owned to date. And I paid $13,000 for this car, brand new, so how's that for bang for your buck?
I'm so disappointed with my Exploder, that my next truck will probably be a Toyota, as I'm tired of 100,000 miles and throw them away Fords/Chevys!:think

i raced a guy with a newer V6 maxima in my '89 hyundai sonata and pulled him off the line...he caught up when we got to about 70mph and pulled slightly ahead but i passed him back shortly after. before long we were up to 120 going down the freeway...that was a rush. i'd probably kill myself if i had a real car...thats why my next vehicle is gonna be a lifted truck that i cant drive too fast

I knew after I said it you guys would think of a couple. I was trying to make a point and didn't back it up very well. I guess I was just tired of certain people bagging on my little rice burner when it really serves it's purpose. No it's not a race car, no it's not a sports car. But neither are half the cars that try to ricky-race me.
And, for the record, I would not be ashamed to get my butt spanked by any of the cars you mentioned, as those are all fine, high performance machines.:D

Please get a clue. Driver error is the cause of the accidents you mention. While it is true - that when you have almost 300 lb./ft of TQ at the rear wheels you can't just stab the gas and turn the steering wheel and expect it to turn properly. You will spin. Uh, this is not just limited to Mustangs though. Any RWD car can be prone to oversteer (including the ones made in Japan).

I have owned FWD and RWD cars and both have their faults. Regarding FWD cars, does torque-steer ring a bell? Mash the gas and the car shoots off to one side or the other before the limited slip diff engages (if so equipped). Not fun.

So to touch on your proclamation that Mustangs can't corner, perhaps you should read what one can do with mild bolt-on suspension mods. How about .97 g's on the skid pad? Read on:

The Maximum Motorsports "Road & Track Box" suspension kit was tested by the editors of Motor Trend. A 1990 Mustang equipped with all the goodies in this package set the fastest slalom time ever recorded by Motor Trend. It also easily attained .97 G on the skid pad. For further details see the article titled, "Grip in a box" in the December, 1998 issue of 5.0 Mustang.

FWIW - a STOCK '99 GT posted the following numbers during Motortrend's testing:

0-60 in 5.4 seconds
1/4 mile in 14.0 @ 100.2 mph
Slalom in 66.8 mph (this involves turning left and right)
Skidpad = .86 g (this involves turning in a circle)

Hrm, a STOCK GT running a 14.0 flat?? I think they got lucky with there times. Usually they run anywhere from a 14.2 to a 14.5 depending on the driver. But hey, maybe those guys at MotorTrend actually know what they are doing :)

Man I sure hope that all of you guys cutting down cars from other countries only ride cannondales or ATK's. Personally I like cars from all countries. Most cars today are designed and built in many countries. GM Ford and Chrysler have all had cars designed and built for them by japanese companies. Also in response to the original post, I know what you mean about poser cars, Ive seen dirtbikes the same way. Tons of stickers but the bike is bone stock. Oh yeah a wing on the back of a front wheel drive actually makes it slower just like on a rear wheel drive car. The whole point is to create downforce and increase traction and therefore increasing control. Oh and about the skidpad tests, the Honda civic del sol (Generation III CRX) could hold a 1g turn from the factory. The best thing about import cars is that you can buy performance parts for them just like your dirtbikes with every posssible gizmo. I know my bike is the same way. My point is you cannot eaisly obtain performance parts for newer american cars (Ive looked). Sure you can get real loud exhausts but thats not the point, its about tuning. Too bad some people are so biased against products from other countries. Well except motorcycles!

American auto makers are taking japanese front wheel drive cars seriously. GM is building a front wheel drive dragster to compete with those awesome civics. Good luck!

Has anyone thought about how dumb RM really is for putting down "rice burners" and then saying he's going to build a Geo to outrun them? When he goes to hop it up, he'll be buying parts for an Isuzu motor.

Hey RM, do you have a union sticker that you can slap on the back of that Geo? You know the one, it says "do not display on import vehicles". Pretty funny seeing them on Fords and Chevrolets too, if you think about how many parts are outsourced.

Drive what you like but don't bag on what other people drive because there may come a day that YOUR car is on the back of a flatbed tow truck and the last thing you want to hear is laughing while you are in the passenger seat of the tow truck! It's called the circle of life and I live by it. It always comes around.

My luck is I'll hear KTMBoy in his cute little chick car, I mean his big block civic laughing. Just kidding, actually I have a civic in the back of my camino as an escape pod!

I guess I'm just a sucker for the sound of a 454 at full throttle with 3" pipes and headers, or without the pipes, that's always nice for the neighbors!

The only thing that keeps me laughing right now are these posts! Thanks. That's real funny, I thought you said chick magnet! You're killing me, stop it! I tried to figure my gas mileage but quit when I found it was around 4 mpg! The good thing about your civic is that when you come home in it, you can drive straight into the house and vacuum the living room!! I guess it's your CIVIC duty to drive it. LOL!

So, you heard about the vacuum attatchment! What I really like is how tight it can turn when I'm cutting the grass! If only I could tow with it. Oh well, I only have to drive the Exploder when I'm towing.:confused:

I actually have the leaf blower attachement, when I start the camino, it blows all the leaves outta my garage! If you need a tow, throw a rope around the bumper of the elk and I'll help seeing is that i'm a public servant! Sorry i'm gonna miss the Arrowhead ride, really bummed about it.

ok, so everyone puts all that money(twin turbos, nitrous, etc.) into 4 and 6 cylinder midsize family sedans. what if you put that technology into a v6 muscle car( dont know if there is such a thing but oyu know what i mean) liek the camaro or firebird. put some twin turbos, and other bolt on's into these cars i bet theyd be smokin most v 8's and most other japanese 4-bangers. i mean, they already put out over 200 horsepower stock right ? just a dream awaiting the budget lol.
