I own a 2000 CR250. I took the shock off to rebuild it and I found out about 1/3 the oil had leaked out. After I pulled the shaft assembly out of the damper case I see that on the inside of the case some of the gold finish is worn off where the seal was inside. I suspect that since the shock was so low on fluid that the seal assembly was moving up and down in the case and wore some the gold polish off inside it, but it still feels smooth inside. My question is can I get by with touching it up with a scotch brite pad so the new seal will seal or is the gold finish needed at that area?

thats typical for shocks with lost nitrogene pressure. there's no force to press the seal head to the outside while rebound, so it moves.

I would give it a try. if it doesn't leak there should be no problem.
