What aperture did you use Chili? It's hard to focus on a moving object when panning, so I usually use a smaller aperture to increase depth of field & increase my chances of a sharper shot. I prefer to really blur the background like you shot using 1/60th.

I too have plenty of shots with a glove, or boot in focus but not the helmet.

nice work, there mr. chili! i think the pans are the grail of motorsports photography because they're so hard to do! i know i've never pulled one off, but with my new 20d (i wanna b like okie!) i'm moto-vated.

and, as you so astutely pointed out, the dork in the pix is hiding the product. but, that's ok because he isn't selling gear anymore. network services, baby!! i can say, regarding the the industry glamour job that i been there, done that, but i'm happy to have my hobby back.

hope all is well in canada and that son of yours is all healed and railing again.

speaking of canucks, do you know allan jaggard?

Awesome shots guys!

Will - you rock, I am proud to run the same number as you!!!! I still remember Dirtweek '04 - you were cruising around the big track on your Yamaha and my mom looks at me and says "Wow, Bruce (Rooster) can really ride huh?!". She was a little confused since I was running the #19 on the WR250 - she thought it was Bruce, not you!!! I still giggle to myself everytime I think of that!!!

I didn't set the aperatrue manually for the pans I simply put it on shutter priority and set the shutter speed I was after. The 1/60th was @f14, the 1/125th was @f16 and the 1/200th was @ f22. BTW for all you firefox users this is a great extension the allows you to see the exif data (if the poster didn't strip it) with a simple right click and select properties.

You'll enjoy that camera and as I'm sure Okie has told you the glass is as or more important than the camera body.

I suspected as much when I looked closely and saw that it was No Fear gear and they weren't a TR brand as far as I knew. Good luck with the new venture!

Sadly he has hardly done any riding since DW04. He came back part way into last season and made it 4 moto's before he ended up in a pile up off the start, the plate in his femur bent under impact from the bike and re-broke his femur, ending his season. He got a few practice days in to start this season, then on open practice the day before the first race he got pitched over the bars in some sand whoops and broke his collarbone. He just started riding again yesterday from that one, plans to race again at the start of August. I may wrap him in bubble wrap since we are meeting oldguy and Spider at Millville and the kids are going to run AM day before the National.

#2 is my fav, the one titled "last one" would be a good candidate to have done the slow shutter pan/motion blur thing.

I got your "blur thing" right here mister. This is what, 200+ mph :p

yep those are kinda nice shots. Who is the photog?

Those shots are by Emile Cooper aka Squid31 on a few forums. He's a Canadian from Southern Ontario. Dave I think I may have introduced you to him in St. Louis? Him and a buddy stopped by my room for a beer on the friday night.

To give you an idea how hard a go it can be, as of the start of last SX season Emile was basically begging for credentials to shoot any SX. As far as I know he's sold a few shots from this past SX season but is currently working full time at a real job trying to pay for equipment.

And for those into the MegaPixel wars those would have been shot with a 4 megapixel 1D as I know Emile sold his 1DmkII after the SX season when the cash wasn't flowing.

Some very nice shots Lou. That first shot of Windham is killer without those dang yellow track markers. The Windham/Reed shot is a great "caption time" shot.

The photo buddy you saw was likely Emile who we were discussing on the previous page of this thread.

I've got to get in touch with Emile about something else so I'll see if he can give me the exif data. I do know what equipment he shoots with:

Canon 1D
Canon 70-200 f2.8
Canon 300 f4
Sigma 24-70 f2.8

Kevin saying to Reed " the throttle is on the right and if you twist it this far you could catch that redhaired kid"

Here is the exif for the 1st Villopoto shot. Emile's response when I sent him a link to the thread is included.

Emile Cooper via e-mail said:
Doug,

Here's the exif for the 1st shot. I don't know why it says manual white balance, because I never use it. Most likely was on cloudy.

Tell everyone over on DRN I said thanks, and tell Lou (I think that's his name) he should win the contest. His shots look great.

Later,

Emile
