My ortho told me it may take up to a year or so for nerves to regenerate completely after being damaged through injury and/or surgery. I was numb from my neck down to the fingertips after breaking the collarbone. Lots of nerves run under that bone I guess. After 2 months the sensation began to return, starting at the fingers first, and slowly working its way up the arm to the collar bone area. Took about 9-10 months for all the feeling to come back. I still have a spot about the size of a half-dollar at the tip of the shoulder that's still a little numb - 2 years later.

A lady I know just about cut the tip of her finger off completely (just past where the finger bone ends). They sewed it back on, but it was completely numb for 6-8 months. Today all the feeling is back in her finger tip.

That such information as the healing of nerves is mentioned, is part of what this thread is all about. Every little bit helps someone somewhere. If there are any 'stories' about recovering from back surgeries, let them fly. You never know if just one word will be what triggers an idea or helps solve a situation. I will add that nerves also have a long memory. Years ago I sliced a thumb on a tin can. Now that thumb is the first to let me know his neighbors are going to get cold next.

In the last four days I've been from Ohio to Wisconsin and don't know what Woodsy is up to either. More than likely though, lost somewhere. I'll try to find out something later today. Maybe if he sees that I have been working on the Renie's card investigation and will soon have a report for everyone here, it might rattle his cage. I'm just trying to keep my word Woodsy. Coach Yahoo is ging to keep his also.

It is soooo nice to be missed, at least you all know that I cant get into TO much mischief with this back brace on :nener:
I went and spent some much needed time with my Dad after seeing the kids off to College. We had a blast hashing over old Deer Hunting stories and recounting past "Woodsy" encounters - like the time I walked over 18 miles trying to get back to him and the truck :yikes:
He is even calling me Woodsy now ;)
I REALLY appreciate all the idea's and thoughts about all this back stuff too! Like Ted said, ANY idea's - let em fly!!
An update, I had a Doctors appointment this morning. There are some new complications and they want to install an Electronic Bone Growth Stimulator (you IWAACers get your mind out of the gutter!!!!) on the 7th of September, I have rescheduled the MRI on my rotator cuff for the 9th (my shoulder locked up again - I COULDNT MOVE IT!!). THey have moved my pain killer up a notch, seems like this stuff aint working as good as it was...
I had messages on the voice mail from several folks when I got home from Dads. Most were identifiable but there was one - I think it may have been Napper - that was GREAT!! No name, no return number just a super cheer up!!!!!! THANKS!!!

They all said that it sounded like I was serving some special interest group :eek: ALso, as soon as I said that my constituency consisted of ALOT of IWAACers they asked me to leave :think:

Oh man, sorry about that Mark. That 40" measurement came from another one of my "platforms" that involved Amusement Parks lowering there height requirements on coasters so short people could ride too! :rotfl:
As you pointed out, the correct measurement for ALL single trail is 28 inches.

and thanks for the link! WOW, what an adventure those guys had. Some of it sounded real familiar, including the fall off the cliff, until the BEAR entered the picture! THAT IS UNREAL!! They are WAY out of my league :worship:
We in Michigan name our bikes so we dont have to have a GPS. When we get seperated from them all we have to do is SHOUT the correct name they come ripping :eek:
All joking aside, his story brought up a VERY GOOD reason to carry a GPS - COULD YOU IMAGINE LOSING YOUR BIKE :bang: - or, could you imagine FINDING a bike after several years of it sitting in the bush :yikes:

HI Guys:
All kinds of really cool things happening! In spite of all the “activity” during Labor Day I had enough “umph” left to get to the doctor for this "bone growth stimulator". I am finding out QUICKLY how much things have changed over the years, not just with our bikes, but BIGTIME in the medical field. I was under the impression that I may have had to have another small surgery to “implant” some kind of device or something.. Man was I WAY out in left field…
The device I came home with is called a “Spinalogic” bone growth stimulator (see pic of me wearing it attached). It’s a strap on device. I did some “googleing” on it when I got home because at first it appeared to be a possible JOKE – you know, money maker hype... I soon found out that this device is SERIOUS!! So serious that the Manufacturer GUARENTEES results or they refund the $5000 that it costs!! Also, the statistics are GREAT so I am now dedicated/committed to its usage! I found out something quite intriguing during my googling, did you now that when bones are bent or broken that they emit an electrical current, the complexity of our body’s never cease to amaze me!!!
The “controller” on the device is cool in that it documents your usage/non-usage on a daily basis so EVERYONE knows whether or not it’s being used. I have to take it to all my doctors appointments so he can verify usage – I LIKE THAT!! I am sure that there are lots of folks that would feel otherwise but I like KNOWING that the Doctors know that I am serious about healing properly – besides, if I didn’t take it seriously I would have a bunch of IWAACers hunting me down!! :yikes:

Young Ted, I GOT YOU BEAT BUDDY (may as well pick on you now that you’re down too)!! I am now at 32 steps - 100ft in 36 seconds!!! :yeehaw: Little by little I am getting there!! I am reminded DAILY that I still have to be careful and not to do to much…. If I over do it I get an “I’m still hurting back here” from my sciatic nerve.
Tonight I have to go for the shoulder MRI that I have been putting off. I will let you all know the results of it!

I received this picture in an E-Mail and about fell out of my chair with RAW LAUGHTER - THE BURNT SQUIRREL TWIST has been perfected!! Some of you crazy IWAACers are getting WAY to crazy!! Just think of what would have happened to this poor soul if the neighbors would have caught his act!!! :rotfl:
Now, for another test of “keenness of eyesight”, see if you can fiqure out which of you pranksters pulled this one!!! A hint, check the local papers in their police log and see if there have been any “WACKY WAACers” escape lately!!!

Renie Investigation

Due to the complexity of the situation, a special commission was formed. After hiring a Director, Secretary, Investigators, Travel Manager, Analyst, Janitor, obtaining a fully equipped headquarters and a dirt bike for relaxation and fitness of the staff, there was not enough left in the budget to make the first phone call. As such, the best has been done with what is at hand.

Object – To determine the yahoo that tipped off Renie to send a card to recipient known as Woodsy.
Conclusion – There were insufficient results to prove identity of the specific yahoo. This could indicate that a subcontractor was employed. (This is a formal report and use of the word bribe violates ethical matters).
Data – Recipients situation about address and other things that are a matter of public knowledge. Statements from 3 yahoos that volunteered answers to original query. Personal interaction between recipient and special commission. A not as well known event concerning commission investigator.
Procedure – All data was put through a logic process. In due time it was sorted and arranged into an understandable form.
Discussion – Word of situations and actions spreads far and fast. To track the path can be a task with no success. This could well be one more of those mysterious happenings. This report has been done with pleasure for the physical, mental and psychological well being of a big hearted, fine friend and special brother.

That electric currents flow through the body makes sense. If not, where would we get positive and negative people? I consider ourselves fortunate that we have positive people here on MTR. Sure, now and then we see that something sucks. But so do calves and look at the nice heifers and potent bulls they turn out to be. Livestock 101 is over.
Woodsy – I too have received an E-Mail with the ‘Twister’ picture and the comment ---- pretty funny eh! No Terry, it isn’t the least bit funny. Otherwise I would have to laugh and that would hurt more than I care to take right now. My first question is if the sender and performer are one and the same. I have followed up on your hint to check the local papers and found the following. There is an account about an inmate that got away from the asylum and committed an assault. The police report was condensed to – Nut, Bolts & Screws. There was however no mention of what appears to be a well fed white owl.

Hey Woodsy, Some friends and I ventured into the woods this weekend. What a blast. I've never been riding in the Jamez mountains untill last weekend, I didn't know what I was missing. So, there'll be no more desert dust coming from me for a while! Just the smell of two-stroke smoke and fresh mountain air! Hope all is well with your recovery, and tell Ted and Sally I said get well soon.

Pecks Bad Boy

I will have to put my IWAAC membership on hold for a bit. Woodsy got carried away last week and will have to cool it for a while. Overextended would have to be the proper word. He is well aware of what he has to do to heal but his devotion to responsibility as a father and husband has overshadowed his own recovery. I’m not sure of the order, but he has done at least the following in the past ten days or so.
1. Taken Cheryl for a ride on his street bike.
2. Helped me with shoes, socks & etc. after my fall.
3. Gotten on the creeper to find trouble with Jason’s car, didn’t and had to be picked back up completely.
4. Tried to get a bike engine off the garage floor to move a bench and get ready for winter.
To my question of – can’t you ask someone for help? – the answer was – everyone has their own full schedule and I don’t want to bother them. It is easy for me to type this for I am exactly the same. If there were a difference, it would be that having been around a few more years I am closer to the point of realizing when you have to say no to yourself. Should anyone care to add words of advice, comfort or admonishment, please do so, for they will be here for him to read as soon as possible. Maybe Woodsy has learned a lesson now, for I know that I have.

This is your conscience speaking:

You are much too valuable to your friends to mess up your recovery by being stupid!

You have been told to "do" not "overdo" ... why are you lifting motors or 'creeping' beneath automobiles?

You have been administered the most cutting edge medical science that man has to offer ... yet you mess with your fate by performing high risk behaviors for inconsequential gains ... is this what you define as reasonable behavior?

IWAAC'ers won't be any easier on you should you manage to suffer a medical setback ... in fact, they may become more irritable than ever ... something you do not want to risk!

All MTR'ers have a stake in your recovery ... don't let them down by getting "over anxious" ... you have several hurdles to overcome before a return to regular activity will be expected of you!

Eventually we all expect you to repay our efforts in full ...
*we want you to ride with us
*we want you to get us lost
*we want you to be the same guy you were before this mess with your back and shoulder came to being

If you listen to your conscience ... and do what the Doctors have advised ... in much shorter time than you can imagine possible, this will surely come to pass!

If you decide otherwise, well ... let's not go there ... agreed?

Scott...Dude... I live like what, 10-15 minutes away from you. If you need help with something just call. I'll gladly come over to help (and see what mischief I can get into) I know its hard to ask for help sometimes but you know better than to be lifting motors and crawling under cars with your back the way it is. I can tell you are feeling better. But dont ya think ya may be pushing it a little. I suppose you have to push once in a while to find your limits. But I think you over did it a little this time. Espicially helping Ted with his sox...Yeack....

Ted, if your hurt because of these guys and thier comments please DONT BE!! To be honest with you I REALLY appreciate ALL of you crazy IWAACers and your comments!! If your hurt because you think I am hurting worse - thats OK but not necessary. I am still on target and am constantly learning my limits!
Some explaining about all this "stuff":
My son got up to go to work (he is a shift manager at Arby's - works till 2 am so he sleeps REAL late). Gets up to go to work and his car wont start. I stand beside him and TELL him what to do for diagnostics. He narrowed it down to the starter, we needed to find out how major of a job the starter is so, yep, he fed me under the car on a creeeper after I VERY carefully laid down on some couch cushions and rolled onto it. After getting down I found out that the ONLY way I could get back into my upright postion was to be LIFTED entirely. YEA you guys - THAT WAS STUPID!!! Jay (my son) and I had a REAL good long talk about Dad not being the same person and that he is going to have to fend for himself for a spell!!
I didnt actually take my wife for a ride on the bike. We were suppose to go on our 24th wedding anniversery ride and we chose to not do so and went in the car instead. The problems came up as I spent WAY more time on my feet during the date then I should have. Again, MY OWN STUPID FAULT - my wife kept telling me that we needed to go but I was having fun celebrating!
Now concerning the bike engine... While out doing some picking up in the garage I noticed this 125cc three wheeler motor sitting on the floor at the end of a table that I had set there last fall. I squatted down, grabbed ahold of it and a THOUSAND voices SCREAMED in my head (hmmmm, maybe there is something to this IWAACer conscience thing)not to even think about lifting it. I then tryed to slide it over a little and found out why those voices were screaming! I called my wife out into the garage, she bent over it and was goign to lift it with her back - I STOPPED HER!! Later that day my neighbor did come down and hauled it outback and placed it on a shelf in the lean2 for me...
Now, at the heart of ALL these issues are EXACTLY what you guys are talking about. It is also at the heart of what I spoke to Ted about. I DO have to learn to say NO to myself! To listen to the intelligence of the Doctors, my friends/family (this includes ALL of you) and finally/mainly to my own conscience. I am also learning that I REALLY need to not let myself get into "compromising" situations in the first place - this is even more difficult!! As much as I REALLY appreciate ALL of the CD's/Video's, books, magazines and other stuff you guys have loaned/given me I am still me and I find it VERY difficult to stay down. :ugg: I personally DETEST Television (what a WASTE of precious time - THANKFULLY I have had ALL of you sending me stuff that is interesting......) all most as much as I detest DRUGS :bang: I am slowly but surely learning to deal with the latter...
Anyway, THANKS you guys for the concern and the IWAACer whooping! I deserved and NEEDED THAT!! :aj:
