My ortho told me it may take up to a year or so for nerves to regenerate completely after being damaged through injury and/or surgery. I was numb from my neck down to the fingertips after breaking the collarbone. Lots of nerves run under that bone I guess. After 2 months the sensation began to return, starting at the fingers first, and slowly working its way up the arm to the collar bone area. Took about 9-10 months for all the feeling to come back. I still have a spot about the size of a half-dollar at the tip of the shoulder that's still a little numb - 2 years later.
A lady I know just about cut the tip of her finger off completely (just past where the finger bone ends). They sewed it back on, but it was completely numb for 6-8 months. Today all the feeling is back in her finger tip.
