Hi,
Been reading a lot, and I have a friend convincing me to get a dirt bike. Im a new rider, and I want to get into woods / offroad stuff. Im 6'4" and about 190. Would a 2 stroke 250 (YZ, or KX) be to much power for a new guy like me? Im afraid of getting a 125 and not having enough power. Im going to be buying used, maybe late 90's, something in the $1500 range. Any suggestions?

Theres an '03 KDX200 on craigslist for 2k, good deal / good bike?

I went 125 because it was a good deal, then 4 months later I and got a new 250. The 125 if fun, but the 250 is where it's at.

Ahh, thats a good site. Thanks. I was looking at KBB, and it was quoting significantly higher, but NADA looks more reasonable. I probably dont need something that new either, a few years earlier and they get substantialy cheaper. Thanks!

Which one ?

The KDX 200 or 220 would be a very good choice for you to get started on. Great trail bikes with enough zip to keep you interested. they are very dependable too. If you decide on a used 250, I'd recommend either the KTM MXC or EXC or if you prefer japanese, the Yamaha YZ 250 or Kawasaki KX 250. I believe they are more versatile and better for off road than the Honda and Suzuki which are more targeted for the track.

amc473,

I am 6' 230lbs and I ride a 2001 KDX 220 and love it. A buddy of mine has a 2001 KX 250 and he wanted me to take it ridding to see what I thought so I did. The KX had a lot more power but it was a lot harder to control the power in the tight woods I was ridding. Also the suspension on the KX seemed way to stiff for me on the rocky trails. I think a KDX would be a great choice.
