Hi,

Im looking at a new race bike. Ive never raced formally but dont know if im ready for a 450. I am 6 foot 210lbs. I feel that with a couple months of practice i would i be able to control and race a 450 in a 250 class. Is this too much of an assumption? I have ridden 250s controllably but am thinking about making the jump to a 450. Is this a bad idea. If not, what bike would you suggest. I am looking more at ktm's as my friends who have them say they are very reliable. Thanks

The 450 is more, smoother power. As long as you have the strength to hang onto it you should do fine. A 250 2t has a much harder hitting powerband than a 450. Most guys just lug a 450 a gear high if they get tired so it doesn't get away from them.

yeah boy, Get the 450. Dont' be scared of it. They got so much power you can lug em till the cows come home and NOT scare yourself. Sure they'll jump out from under you if your being dumb but that'll teach ya throttle control. What kind of stuff you riding? Woods? desert? mx?

The modern 4 strokes are very easy to ride. The power delivery is smooth and predictable. A guy your size will do well on a 450. Just take your time and get used to the bike before you start using it's full power, because if you do grab to much when your not ready, they kinda become a sort of "runaway freight train", and it will end up taking you for a ride. Good luck and NEVER over ride your skill level.

It is my opinion that 450's are down on power as compared to open class 2 strokes. The best 450's make about 50HP at the wheel. Compare that to a 65HP CR500 2 stroke and you may feel the same way I do. Yes, the 450 are smoother. No question about it. The real monster is the open class 2 stroke, not the 450.
