Help with Internet Explorer

You mentioned that you are on a cable connection, is there a router between the PC and the modem? If you have had the same problem with both IE and Firefox,l there is a good chance that the browser is not the problem. Also, if it worked, then stopped, then you must ask yourself what changed. Did you install any new software? If you didn't, then try a different cable modem. This is especially try since you said that Firefox worked for a while then stopped. That leads me to believe that it isn't an IE problem. Don't get me wrong, I do feel that Microsoft is the biggest virus on the internet, but sometimes Bills software is wrongly accused. Some modems are beter than others. Not being able to sit down at your PC and root around, I can't really give you more than that.

Thanks for the help and suggestions. On both IE and Firefox the update popped up and said I needed to download the latest update. So I downloaded the updates on each (at different times) and then they both couldn't seem to find my server. Since I posted this yesterday I have since lost Netscape Navigator. So I essentially have no internet access on my desktop (I'm using a borrowed laptop with IE right now). Netscape can no longer connect to my server.
There is no router between my system and the modem. I wouldn't mind getting a newer cable modem, but I'll have to pay for that. It just seems silly to buy a new modem when all my stuff worked fine two months ago. I may have a couple of resources (computer geeks) available to me. I just need to bribe one of them to come check out my dilemma. Thanks again for the tips everyone!

try a new service - if your still on crapscape, i went to dsl -yahoo,att, no probs like i had with netscape- nets browser was crap,and i had probs with there newest version

They are correct, if you are connecting throught the modem on another machine, the modem is likely not the problem. Try taking a look at your TCP/IP settings.
Go to the control panel and choose network settings, then choose local area connection. Chick the properties button. On the general tab, find Internet protocol (TCP/IP) and make sure it's checked, select it then click the properties button. MAke sure that both Obtain an IP address automatically and obtain DNS servers automatically are selected.

Reconnect the cable modem to the desktop and reboot BOTH..
It is very important that you reboot both the computer and the modem. That way the modem and compter can renegotiate the connection. I won't go into the dirty details about why, but suffice it to say that DHCP can not reconnect to new hardware without a reboot.

I just tried all of that and everything was already set up the way you recommended. Under network connections I'm showing Broadband, disconnected, firewalled WAN Miniport (PPPOE). Then under LAN or High-Speed Internet it says Local Area Connection 3 Connected, firewalled Motorola Surfboard 4200.
My borrowed laptop from work runs fine with IE. That's the only way I've got internet acces at home right now. I appreciate all the feedback you guys are giving me!
Local area connection 3 is apparently the one that is connected to your modem. That firewalled miniport might be a problem since it is set for PPPoE. PPPoE is usually a DSL thing and not used by any cable internet provider that I know of. Also, look at your firewall and see how restricted it is.
Another troubleshooting tip, go to the command prompt and type "ipconfig /release" and press enter
when the prompt comes back type "ipconfig /renew"

I'm about ready to start pulling my hair out. I got rid of the PPPoE broadband connection. I also compared the laptop's IE settings with the desktop settings and they're both exactly the same. So I downloaded AdAware and ran it. Got rid of 42 files but IE still doesn't find my server (neither does Firefox). I'm just totally stumped.

Have you tried resetting/power cycling the cable modem?
Is it connected by ethernet, or a USB port? Maybe you could try whatever your not using to see if the ethernet card, or USB port has went south.
Im grasping for straws,but you never know.
