A friend of mine has an 86 XR 600 with a blown rear shock. The shock on this bike is not rebuildable so I need info on where to get either a good used one or a new aftermarket or oem one. He wants to spend as little as possible on this old bike.

I have serviced the shock on my '86 XR250R and it sure looked rebuilable to me. You should be able to revive it as long as the body is not worn out. I should not be too hard to find a cheap replacement for the body if needed.

Progressive used to sell a replacement shock that was pretty inexpensive. It was a remote resivior type but was supposed to work much better than the stock unit.

The 86 XR600's shock was rebuildable.
The 86 XL600's was not (who would want to, it was a piece of doo doo)

Phil at Aftershocks (650-494-8849) in Palo Alto, Ca. did mine.
