This one was at El Mirage and each year it always seems to be a good turnout. Over 60 kids raced in the Beginner and Junior classes on Saturday alone ! And there were at least that many in the adult classes on Sunday.

Among the Wrecking Crew members who showed were Scar Tissue, RM Jeff, KelsoRat, Dingoe, PlayswFire, Old 'n' Slo, BrettR and 2Stroke4Fun. HoleShot, who is grudgingly a regular, was MIA this time.

Luckily, 5 of us we're able to get on the same row ... O'n'S, KelsoRat, Scar, 2Stroke4Fun, and myself. :yeehaw:

The weather was great ... not cold, not hot ... but just right.

As usual the course offered variety ... the spice of life !
Long snakey sand washes to blast through, not many rocks overall but still a few small rockbeds to carefully navigate, silty hillclimbs, lots of soft turns, and plenty of straight-up cross country railing. The one thing that stands out about this race was how generally soft it was. Much of the trail was foot deep silt by the time the 1st loop had been run. Lots of fighting to keep the front end straight here. It was funny how I would come in hot to a silty uphill and my bike would just go brr rrr rrrrrr r r r r r. The sand in one section looked like we were on a beach ... someone was stuck there everytime I came through. I would hit it fast and the sand would just suck up the horsepower and send my bike swapping all over the place. Some seriously ugly riding ... legs hanging off and I'd just be trying to hold on ... squidlike .. like that MX Unleashed commercial where the 4 "cool" guys send the "nerd" to test a big wooden ramp. Thank god I finally mounted my damper ! There wasn't anything too technical but the speeds were up pretty high (by enduro standards) around the time the 3rd loop came around ... some long sections at both 30 and 36 MPH.

Seemed like everyone had a good time though Kelso hurt his foot, Dingoe punctured a radiator hose, and 2Stroke lost his notoriously loose shift pedal. Hope to see everyone next month ... !

Actually, I wasn't MIA, because I was out at Mirage on Saturday to do the GPS poker run. It looked like I wouldn't be able to do that either, because they only allowed teams (for safety reasons), but at the last minute, I was able to get the OK to run it on my own.

I set out to find the first set of coords, looking for someone to be standing out there and handing out cards. After several gruesome climbs in search of it, I gave up the first one and decided to go for #2. When closing in on #2, I saw a couple of riders dismounted near the trail. As it turns out, the cards at each location were stashed in plastic bags, typically hidden behind a rock or bush about 100 feet off the beaten path. Doh. :moon:

Baggie #3 - No cards in this one, so someone must have taken a mittfull (only supposed to take one)

Baggie #4, 5 and 6 weren't too hard to find, but it became apparent that riders were taking cards to make their best hand (and taking more than one to achieve it). Oh well, this is only a poker run - I guess anything goes.

Baggie #1 - Finally found it and returned to camp. As it turns out, the winner got a straight flush.

The GPS event was like a high tech Easter egg hunt, but I still enjoyed it. After the GPS run, I went out and hammered a few whoops, but I could last only a couple of miles, so I decided not to enter the next days enduro. Too bad, because Mirage is one of my favorite events.

RMJeff was out there with his new CRF450, but his son's KX100 ate a piston, so he had to leave before the kid's event.

Oh yeah, there were never any cards in baggie #3 - the organizer's left that bag empty (to confuse people). :thumb:

Holeshot, I didn't know who you were. I was getting ready to head out on the GPS run with my son when you were there talking to Al (the guy that ran the GPS event). I was on the black CR, and my son on the KX85. Ended up riding around the event with Jeff (the guy who won) and his son.

I later heard that a lot of guys were swapping cards out at each stake, and then swapping between each other. I will tell you though, Jeff picked his cards with no funny play at all! When he was getting close to his flush, I may have mentioned that I had a card he may want, if he had anything for me. He declined, and ended up with not only a flush, but a straight flush.

For next month they are going to put each card in a seperate envelope. You will have to bring your cards, still in the envelope's in to be opened by the person running the event. That should even the odds a little!

I was really looking forward to this event, because I know how fun Jeff and Curt's courses are, but ended up catching a cold mid week. I went to the event hoping to feel better and make the race. After following my boys around their races, and doing the GPS challange, it was obvious I was in no condition to race. Oh well, they needed extra checkers anyways. Sure was fun watching all of you plow down that silty hill to the sharp left hander before the second check! A few guys put on a pretty good show for us! From the looks of everyone on the second and third loop checks, the speeds were wicked fast!

Sorry that I wasn't more social with the crew, but I was trying my best not to share too many germs.

Eel, thanks for leading the way. If I can make a few enduros in a row I will have to invest in one of those computers.

It is a good thing I don't live back east. The way I went up some of those hills I need lots of room. I went thru a couple of bushes. If those were trees I would be hurting more than I am now.

Hope to see ya next month.

Sounded more like an easter egg hunt than a poker run Holeshot. Now that would be fun to do with a GPS a Poker Run Hunt on Easter. Of course the BLM would probably fine you for littering when you hide the cards.

Thanx again Eric and Tim for leading the way and setting the pace, I had a great time.

The course was loose and gave up alot of dust, some rain needed. Traction wasent too bad, and my well worn tire got enough bite to keep moving. "The Beach" was interesting and demanded alot of throttle, last time thru especially. I enjoyed the variety and couldnt have picked a route in the same area that offered as much fun if I was just out poking around.

I allready purchaced my replacement clutch parts and got the new shifty thingy. Ill be ready for next month easy. I am also concidering a Rekluse auto clutch in the swap. Can a bike get too easy to ride?

RMJeff, Thanks for leading me back in. I owe ya one. I pulled my bike apart yesterday and it's not that bad. I'll have a new Rad junction hose by this coming Saturday. Thanks to all, it was a blast. I'll miss the March event, but I'll see you all at the Prospectors.

As for the results, I couldn't find where I placed. When I left Tim and Wayne said that I fell 5 minutes or so. Not that good I guess. But it was the best one I've run yet. In fact the only one I've finished, besides the District enduros.

Thanks again to all

Tim Moore is fixing the results, They made a typo and gave me 12 minutes on check 5 instead of 12 seconds. That should bump me up to the top 5 in my class.

It was good to see everyone and alot of fun to be on the same minute. I thought the course was fun althought I love the sand washes. Just hold it on and pray :aj:

Eric thanks again for the watchdog clinic :thumb: I do have to stop wheeling thought the course so my milage tracks properly. :worship:

I'm planning on bringing out My boy Jake and his bike + some fiends for the March race.

I'll see some of you at The Adelanto GP. Look for the guy being airlifted out, that has a good chance of being me

Until next month :moon:

Eel and 2Stroke4Fun, Check out the TWMC photos from Sunday. I could be wrong, but it looks like they got a shot of you two on one of the hills. It's a good photo too. Would make good wallpaper.

I sold the WR and picked up the CRF the same night. Would have been nice to keep it but I just couldnt swing the $$$$.

Question for you guys.

What are your thoughts on slower kids on 80's riding Sundays event? I ran across a few and was afraid to pass. I just didnt want to hurt them. I ended up passing 2 in a row on the second loop going up the hill just before the 2.9 mark. It took some serious bushwacking to get around.

I use Bundys techique and give em a face full of roost :flame:

Really though, I haven't come across that to much. If any enter the event usually they are in the novice X class and only doing the first slow loop anyway. However, you always get people not with our group or in the race, riding the course because they have no clue of whats going on. Often they ride it backwards. I usually yell for them to get off the course befoe they get hurt. The next race at hodge road I recall passing quite a few quads on the race course. I try to go by quickly and get away from them. It always kind of sucks when they are stuck on a one line hill climb in front of you. :| But remember it's all for fun.

Well, that is until Thumbs shows up, Then were out for Blood :aj:

Great results Scar :worship: , and hey look, Brent on an 80 took second and Susan (a lady) took fifth  . Not that it makes your accomplishment any less. haha.. sorry just giving you a hard time :p . That's excellent results for how many times you've raced!

BTW, the kid on the 80 races district, and is super fast, while the lady has been riding enduros longer than any of us!

Oh its definitely all for fun. I just worry about hurting one of the little guys.

As far as being passed by the 80's or a girl.....I usually throw myself in a bush and claim to have crashed. :) Seems to happen alot

I was out there, but I was sick, so I worked checks (2nd, 6th and I think 10th). I was trying to write extra minutes on Eel's card to give me a points advantage, but my co-worker seemed to always score him.

plysWfire is actually my old nickname. I had lost the password and cancled the email account that I used to set it up, so I just created a new one (bishop_d). :clue: I finally figured out that I could email the head honcho here, and requested that my password be reset.

I will now and forever more be known as plysWfire :flame: ...
