here's the kicker . . .

the pipe is gonna need some surgery to get around the shock reservoir. as you can see, it sticks out to the side quite a ways, and that's when it actually is touching the reservoir.

I got some ideas, but anyone else got any suggestions?

Vanna thought she should show it off.

Pred it looks to me like you should have room to get a piece of pipe bent to dip under the reservoir so maybe just splice a piece in to the exhaust.

BTW it looks like buttercup might have a bright future on The Price is Right ;) (she MUST look like her mother)

agreed, Pat. There's just enough room under that shock reservoir for the pipe. I'm cutting all the mounting tabs off the stocker right now, and I've cut the silencer from the headpipe. Now a little more routing, a little bit of welding, and a little tweaking and I should have this sucker running by the weekend!

Pred2 thinks its kinda cool too, that's why his uncle bought it for him. It'll have a white rear fender as well, as soon as it shows up at the shop.

YZ85, I'm not sure.

The one I have on this bike will fit with the YZ80 suspension/tripleclamp. The fender fits from 93-02 YZ80.

The stock TTR fender matches a pre-93 YZ80

Ok I have a question, that seems pretty relevant to this project.

Will modifying the characteristics of the exhaust (changing length, adding bends, etc) effect the performance of the bike at all?

I am about 90% positive that if this were a 2 stroke the answer would be yes.

But considering its a 4 stroke, I'm inclined to say no....?

if the machine was in a high state of tune, then maybe.

since it's just a superfun playbike, the length should not be an issue :)

okay, I should take a few more pics during the manufacture, but I get in a hurry sometimes. Here's the pipe after I did some bending and shaping and slapping on a coat of aluminum high-heat:

now the brake reservoir is mounted, tucked up behind the number plate real nice like, and the master cylinder's been tweaked out so it doesn't hit the swingarm . . .

today is the day for the ride test.

too much awesome!

Ride Report:

All the way up, Pred2 was quiet and pensive. He seemed a bit lost in his thoughts, I guess thinking about how this ride was going to go. I asked him if he was nervous, he said "a little". Understandable, since it's been a good 6 months since he last rode, and he has no idea how these changes will affect his motorcycle.

I get the bike unloaded, and the engine is as cold-blooded as any other TTR I've been around (next hop up on the list). Finally, everything is at operating temperature, and he takes off for a lap around the track. My brother and my cousin had just ran a cultivator around the track the week before, but didnt' have time to run it with any bikes, so it was freshly groomed and very soft. Pred2 gets the bike going and heads out. After a couple minutes he comes back in PISSED! "This bike doesn't work at all!!! It's the most awful motorcycle ever!!" :yell:

After the tirade, I explained that it wasn't the bike, it was the track. To prove it, I sent him out on something a little smoother to get the hang of it until I got the track worked in with Vic. He came back around the big loop road, and when he got back, I got a thumbs up. Of course, my brother got a thumbs down for his efforts at track prep. :rotfl: He did end up with an almost thumbs-up after some shovel work.

After all was said and done, I asked Pred2 if the mods were a success. He smiled and said "yep. Thanks, Dad."

(all I had was the dang ol' phone camera, so this is the movie I get)

Nice. I would think with some internal mods the bike could be mabe competitive in the 85 class.
My bro-in-law did the bbr 150 kit, shaved the flywheel, installed a rev box and put the pc pipe on. Ran good for a few months, probly would keep up with an 85. But recently it seems the bottom end it stressed as it snaps the main shaft in the tranny every 10 or so hours. :yikes:
