MXBundy -- a bikini wax? Preppin' for thongs and such? Well f-in done, man!!
KXaggerator -- don't worry, if you start to enjoy it too much we'll make you make you walk the entire route in your pumps. That should cure you.
Ol89r -- What was it like to be initiated back when the nearest thing to a thong was a petticoat? Must have been hot, eh? And, btw, I resent your implication -- I think I looked darling in my pumps, thank you very much.

If everyone on the list can make it we will have 36 riders.
I will be camping at Big Pine (Friday only) so if anyone needs to have a camp site held let me know or if you just need to leave a gas can to refuel thats not a problem.
I will be arriving Friday morning around 10am and would like to get a short ride in...any takers?
Thumbs, I'm up for a short Friday ride. See ya there.
Jeff, Pinnacles would really separate the two staging areas. I was trying to keep the two groups somewhat close so we could all ride together on portions of the route. Big Pine may have limited campsites, but there's a parking area across the road that can serve a lot of "drive-ins". A Forest Adventure pass is required to park there. The link to get one is www.fsadventurepass.org
Ideally, we could all stage at one location, but it would have to be Big Pine or another "sticker-friendly" area and the John Bull run would be out since it's the wrong direction and only accessible thru street legal fireroads. If anyone else feels we should try this, please post and I'll try to figure it out.
Right now, it looks like we're gonna have a large cycle caravan on the Deep Creek run. Dale has suggested we'd better send a lead rider in advance to warn on-coming riders :scream:
Sorry I'm late on the map. I'm working out some technical details with Sgr to provide a link to her site for a high resolution map with the planned routes. Should be up early next week.
Weather's been beautiful with temps around 75-80.
I was gonna come in Thursday night or early Friday morn - I will be camping and would ideally like to ride on Friday, Saturday and a bit on Sunday if anybody is still around ... I think Captain Jack is not gonna be able to make it so I'll be driving up myself and tenting it ... where's Big Pine ? And what should I expect regarding trying to camp there ?
MTNGOAT- Definately would like all the 'green' routes marked out, if you could. I would like to download a copy of your map to carry with me. I'm not sure yet if I'll be camping or staying over, but I might stay if I can get someone else to come up. We'll see. Can't wait!
Big Bear Map
This is a "huge" image and will take a while to download, but it was the only way to get the details to show up. It is best viewed in a browser other than AOL (because aol makes it look fuzzy). In addition I split the map into 2 maps that are a printable size.
KTM, on the new map, almost everything west of Big Pine is green/red sticker good. John Bull (3N10) is too, but it's only accessible via street legal fireroads. The entire route I've planned out of Big Pine is green/red sticker good. The route from Wedge Ranch remains street legal.
Eel/Big Pine Directions:
On the new map, Big Pine is north of Fawnskin at the intersection of 3N14/3N16. Here's a map link to the Big Bear area: http://www.bigbear.com/visitorcenter/directions/
At the dam, go straight (to the left) and follow into the town of Fawnskin. At the first intersection, (look for the firestation) and turn left. The paved road will turn to dirt (3N14), which you follow for about 8 miles to Big Pine. It's a first come/first serve, so you should get a campsite, arriving before the weekend. I'm still planning to take Friday off and get a little "pre-ride" with anyone interested.
On the new map, the green route is the easier and red is the tougher route. The yellow spots are our "re-group" areas. From the second westerly re-group area at Crab Flats, we all take the Deep Creek run, which several DRNr's have already done and is "moderately tough". Placelast Jr. (11 yrs old John??) made it with few problems.
For all staging at Big Pine and not sure which route to take, I'd suggest, before the rest of the group arrives (figure 10:00 am), riding up the Malcolm Smith trail (trail head is to the left just north of Big Pine on 3N14) about a mile to check out the first hill climb, which is the toughest climb on the trail going downhill. It's mostly narrow rock-laden downhill from there. The good news is that Adventure Pass funds were used to fund a tractor clean-up of the trail last week and it's noticeably better, but still tough. The map shows it as a "circle" trail; it's diamond level.
I'm printing up small "cheat sheet" cards with the routes for all to carry and use, if separated.
Weather's heated up with temps close to 90 degrees. That combined with high altitude exertion makes hydration an absolute must. Please plan to bring water on the ride. I've been going thru a 70 ounce camel back on recent rides.
If it's OK with everyone, I'd like to move the departure time from Wedge Ranch to 9:00 to beat some of the heat and arrive sooner at Big Pine.
Please update Thumb's list with your staging area. Thanks to all.
Scar, our new map truncated the street route to Wedge Ranch.
Here's verbal directions:
Using the area map posted above, turn right at the dam and follow approx 5 miles to Pineknot (heart of the Village in Big Bear Lake).
Turn left on Pineknot.
Turn right on Big Bear Blvd.
Take Big Bear Blvd. east approx 8 miles to 18/38 intersection.
Go straight thru intersection, road turns inot Shay Road.
Follow Shay Road around Baldwin (dry) Lake to just past a petting zoo/horse rental outfit.
Turn right on Ponderosa Ranch Road.
Turn left on Baldwin Ranch Road.
Wedge Ranch is on the right (1315, look for the big red barn)
Please park on gravel or dirt (kickstands poke holes in the asphalt)
It seems a bit inconvenient for me to camp at Big Pine when the ride starts so far east of it .... our start point is over by Baldwin Lake (if I'm reading the map right) ? If so, shouldn't I camp somewhere over there ?
Is the plan to ride it from Baldwin Lake out to Deep Creek and then turn around and ride it back ?
Thanks for your patience ... and for the directions ...
Eel, you're right. Sorry for the confusion. I'm trying to coordinate different scenarios and didn't figure on that one.
I had only figured the Big Pine stagers would be stickered or only ride the Big Pine/Deep Creek loop. If you want to do the whole loop and camp, Serrano is probably the place to camp. It's lakefront camping and I believe you need to reserve there through www.reserveusa.com (select San Bernardino National Forest). Alternatively, we still have room at our cabin. Let me know.
The plan is to have street legal riders (who want to do an 80 mile loop) stage at Wedge Ranch.
Then we join others at Big Pine (who are stickered or want to camp there or want a shorter 25 mile loop). (gas top-off point)
Multiple difficulty routes out of Big pine.
Regrouping at Crab Flats, where we all take the Deep Creek run, eventually returning to Big Pine, where the Wedge Ranch stagers bid farewell and return to the ranch for afternoon drinks and food coordinated by local wifedom. I had expected most of these riders are on a day trip.
All are welcome at the Wedge Ranch, but because of the street legal restrictions, I didn't figure many, if any, of the Big Pine Stagers would attend because it would involve loading up or leaving bikes at the campsite to drive to the ranch.
However, for the Big Pine/Serrano/?? folks staying over Saturday night, I got a kitchen pass to host a Saturday night BBQ at my cabin. Just need to get a rough headcount.
Ok - cool - I'll take up the generous offer to camp at the Wedge - any update on green sticker leniency though ? From what I gather I would technically need plates if I want to depart on the bike from the ranch directly - is that the case or can I ride directly from the ranch with my green sticker ?
Also, I am totally up for a "pre-ride" on Friday - just let me know when I need to show up ...
Regardless of how it all turns out, you get a big gold star for all the planning involved ..
Eel, sorry, but no campers at the Wedge Ranch. I suggested Serrano thinking you were street legal. With no plate, I suggest Big Pine (lot of street legal only routes out of the wedge Ranch), which will work out better for the pre-ride. Let's figure 11:00 am for the pre-ride. I'm still up for it unless something unavoidable comes up at work.
Got the new front tire on, got the new reeds in, and got her jetted, so it looks like a go. I'll be coming up for the day--staging at Big Pine. I'll try to arrive early enough to check jetting and scope out the 'a' loop to see if I'm up for it.
Looking forward to seeing everyone!:D
I've been out of it for the last two weeks and haven't been able check DRN. Seeing that red stickers are OK, I'd like to go. Put me on the list, tenatively, and let's hope my newborn baby girl doesn't suck the energy right out of me this first week back at work. But I really need to get out and ride!
Ok people we need to start firming up the plans. We need to know a few things to make sure all goes well.
1) Who will be riding? Do I need to add or delet anyone from the list?
2) Where will you be staging @.....Wedge Ranch or Big Pine?
3) Do you (Wedge Ranch stagers) need to have gas @ Big Pine to top off?
4) Who will be returning to the Wedge Ranch for food & drinks?
5) Does anyone need me to save them a camp-site @ Big Pine?

Let me know if I missed anyone or if any of the information above is incorrect. I did take the liberty of guessing where some of you might be staging at based on your scooter type (stickers or plates). For those of you that will be camping it looks like the best place will be at Big Pine.
mtmgoat - I will arriving at Big Pine about 10am on Friday. If you need help with anything let me know and I'm still up for a short Friday ride.
Me and my family plan on coming up on Thurs. and camping (RV) at Big Pine. I am waiting on a subframe to be delivered before Thurs. so I can put my KX500 back together. I will be getting the tracking # tomorrow to confim its progress but unless it is delayed I will be up there by Thurs. afternoon.
Looking foward to meeting everyone and if anyone is wanting to go on a easy type kids ride on Fri. me and my son (11yrs. yz80) will be hitting the trails.:)
you guys are in for a good ride. i was up in big bear last weekend and rode some of the trails you will be hitting. the malcom smith trail is real fun, technical, and a blast. the holcomb trail is fun too, a little wider and faster ride (lot of jeeps on the trail). should be a blast.
Mtngoat--- When I came up last time I took the access road past Crab Flats then dropped through the small water crossing. Is this the best way into Big Pine? Also just to confirm, is Big Pine is where we staged the last time?
